Practical Duties for the Christian in this Present Age, Part 1 (Second Coming Chapel)

TEXT: Matthew 25:31-36

31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:

32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

Practical Duties for the Christian in this Present Age, Part 1

Craig S. Keener said, “This final passage in Jesus’ final sermon in Matthew brings home the reality of judgment. As the missionaries from Matthew’s churches spread the good news of the kingdom both among fellow Jews and among Gentiles, they faced hostility as well as welcome. This prophecy brings together some themes from the rest of the Gospel: Christ, like the kingdom, had been present in a hidden way, and one’s response to his agents represented one’s response to him.”

The passage before us today is a vivid and prophetic statement describing a judgment that will take place when Jesus Christ returns to this earth. After defeating Satan, the Antichrist, and their armies, the King will judge all who are alive at His return. At this time, He will determine who will enter His Kingdom and who will not be allowed to enter His Kingdom.

Regarding this passage, Dr. John MacArthur states: “Jesus’ closing words in the Olivet discourse—a sermon on His second coming given privately to the disciples after His last public teaching in the Temple—were one of the most severe and sobering warnings of judgment in all of Scripture. Pictured as the divine separation of the righteous sheep from the unrighteous goats, that judgment will occur just before Christ establishes His millennial kingdom on earth. Not only will it determine the ultimate, eternal destinies of everyone living at the end of the Tribulation but will also determine who will and will not enter the kingdom. Only those who belong to the King, believers who have been born into God’s spiritual family and been made citizens of His spiritual kingdom, will enter His glorious kingdom.”

While we know that salvation comes through grace by faith alone, in this prophecy, Jesus provides a rationale that establishes proof for the righteousness of the sheep who are welcomed into His kingdom. The King says to those on his right hand, “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.”

Here Jesus describes a series of actions and behaviors that ought to flow out of the life of those who belong to the Shepherd — feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, welcoming the stranger, clothing the naked, caring for the sick, and visiting those in prison. This judgment is a vivid reminder that faith without works is dead. Jesus lifts up the sheep as those who not only believed, but those who lived out their beliefs in difficult times. Those who are alive at this judgment will have lived through the worst seven years in history. It will not have been easy for them to follow the Great Shepherd with the Antichrist seeking to torture and kill them at every turn. Yet, if they can remain true to their faith — not just with inner belief, but with outward actions — we ought to be able to do the same today.

A late 18th-century collection of hymns, titled “The Christian’s Duty,” includes the following song:

Can such poor feeble worms as we
Praise and adore our Saviour’s Name?
Or bring a tribute Lord to thee?
Or half thy power and love proclaim?

We stand amazed, when we behold
Thy glory and thy beauty, Lord!
Thy love and grace can never be told,
Which thou to mortals dost afford.

Yet, Lord, we would attempt thy praise,
We would exalt thy Holy Name;
Lord, we would walk in thy sweet ways;
And sing, and tell thy wond’rous fame.

—–

Now, if you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, I urge you to trust in Him because He is coming again and you do not want to be left behind. Here is how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and the consequences of sin.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Honoring and giving glory to God and Jesus Christ, and remembering their servant Billy Graham by preaching an adaptation of one of his powerful messages.

TEXT: Matthew 24:1-8:

1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.

2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

——

Jesus gave His disciples several signs that would indicate that the time of His Second Coming was near. As we look at our world today, it appears that these signs are playing out all around us. These signs include revival of religion, wars and rumors of wars, an increase in violence and hatred, and people living as they did in the days of Noah.

Another sign Jesus gave is recorded in Matthew 24:14 where Jesus says, “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached to the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.” The Gospel today is being preached for the first time in history to all the nations. Every nation in the world today can hear the Gospel. Nearly every tribe in the world is in the process of being reached. Wycliffe Translators are now in the process of translating the Bible in scores of languages and dialects all over the world. And they say that it is now possible that, within the next ten or fifteen years, every language in the world will have a Bible.

I received a letter recently from a man in Moscow. He wrote, “I heard ‘The Hour of Decision’ last night.” That’s just one radio program. Thousands and thousands are listening to the Gospel all over the world by radio and television for the first time in history. Christian literature is being distributed around the world. And the prediction of Christ that looked hopeless at that time, that looked hopeless a hundred years ago, is now reaching its fulfillment.

But, coupled with this, is another sign that Jesus also indicated would take place. Scripture calls it the great “falling away.” Second Thessalonians 2:3 also describes it as the great apostasy. We are seeing that today as well. The falling away is a desertion of Christ — people who once claimed to know Christ are departing from Him. To the church at Ephesus, Jesus wrote, “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.”

There are people who used to believe that Jesus Christ was the Son of the living God. They used to believe in God’s holy words, but intellectually they have fallen away. They no longer believe. There are others who fall away morally. They still believe intellectually, but they fall away in their lifestyle. It is very much like when Paul wrote, “Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world.” He stopped loving Jesus and had fallen away. You can fall away by Phariseeism. You can become cold and hard and callous, still believing the creed and the dogmas, but not producing the fruit of the Spirit. You have lost your first love, that freshness and joy which you had when you first came to Christ. That is where many people are today.

I believe these signs all point to the fact that Jesus will soon come. And the only way that you can escape the wrath of God that will fall on the world at that time is through Jesus Christ, by placing your faith and trust in Him and Him alone. If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, you are not ready for His Second Coming. Allow me to show you how you can receive Christ as Savior today.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

——

We have seen the first sign which Jesus said would tell us that His Second Coming is near — the revival of religion. All over the world, people are turning to religion and religious teachers for guidance. But what they find is false because it is only through Christ that the world can be saved.

The second sign that Jesus gave is found in Matthew 24:6. Jesus said, “Ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.” Christ said that unto the end there will be wars and rumors of wars. He said kingdom shall rise against kingdom. Some people predicted that great alliances would be formed to fight other great alliances, which brought us to two great world wars and the possibility of a third world war. Christ is saying, in effect, “War is a part of the degenerate economy; and because men refuse to go my way, there will not be real peace among the nations until I come back.”

Ladies and gentlemen, I think every one of us should do everything we can for peace. Every day of my life I pray for peace. We are told in the Scriptures to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem.” We are told to work for peace; we are told to pursue peace. And I believe that is why we should back every effort to bring peace. But after all is said and done, the very best efforts of man will fail. Men will still fight as long as there is hatred in the human heart. As long as there is prejudice in the human heart, men are going to fight. As long as there is greed within men, they are going to fight.

Jesus foresaw all of that. He knew that as long as human nature was separated from God, there would be wars and rumors of wars. And He said when these great wars get devastating and worldwide, the end is not far off.

Then He gave a third sign: “And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.” How much hatred there is in the world today! Much of this hatred seems to involve mental problems. When has there been a moment in history when the American people had such prosperity, and yet there are so many mental breakdowns? Psychiatry is busy today in such a frantic effort to patch up our jangled nerves that I am told psychiatrists are going to each other for help.

Do you know how many chronic alcoholics we have in America? We have five million! Think of it, five million chronic alcoholics in America. Do you know how many sleeping pills we take every night? Twenty-one million. Twenty-one million sleeping pills a night to put us to sleep. I don’t know how many wake-up pills we use to get us up. How many people are taking tablets and pills just to dull them from the realities of life?

Never before in history has there been a nation that had so much and is so bored with life. Walter Reuther says that he wants to bring about a four-and-a-half day week. Well, that sounds fine. But I am going to ask you: What in the world are we going to do with our leisure time? If we are going to invest it for the kingdom of God, let us have it. But if we are going to give it to the devil, let us work six days a week.

Then, fourthly, Jesus said in Matthew 24:37, “As in the days of Noah, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” What were they doing in the days of Noah? They were eating and drinking and making merry. In the days of Noah, they were not against God, they were not antagonistic to God, they did not hate God. They were religious; they believed in God. But they just did not have time for God. They were too busy with their eating and drinking and making merry. They were too busy with their work. They were too busy with their pleasure. They were too busy with their own selfishness to give any time to God at all. They were marrying and giving in marriage. Do you know what that is? That is the divorce problem.

Statistics say that half of all marriages in America end up in the divorce court. Jesus indicated that there would be a tremendous increase in immorality. We have gotten to the place that if some actress has had three or four husbands, the more she can attract people at the box office. I don’t blame the star so much. I blame the people. The morals of the people have gotten so low that they are buying filthy literature. Don’t blame the man who is publishing it. Blame the people who buy it. We are in a position today where a man can commit immorality and people don’t even think anything about it. They just accept it. Jesus said this acceptance of immorality is a sign that the end is near.

Immorality is sin, and the only way that man can be saved from sin and the punishment of sin is through Jesus Christ, through placing your faith and trust in Him and Him alone. If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, you are not ready for His Second Coming. Allow me to show you how you can receive Christ as Savior today.

TEXT: Acts 1:6-11:

6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

——

There are many views about the Second Coming present in the world today. Some say it is a literal future event, some say it is only a metaphor for the world getting better and better, some say it has already happened and we just missed it. Surely the time has come for the church to give to people the right view concerning the blessed hope that Christ is coming again.

The Interpreter’s Bible was edited by Dr. George Buttrick, and is used by many ministers in the preparation of their sermons. In his exegesis of Matthew 24, a passage in which Jesus tells His disciples about the end times, he writes: “Christ wishes to awaken in His heroes a vivid expectation that He will come in glory, in person.” He goes on to say that the teachings of Jesus Christ in these chapters teach that the world as now constituted will come to a catastrophic end. This age will be superseded by a permanent order of righteousness and bliss, the kingdom of God on the earth. This will come about not as a result of evolutionary processes but by God’s direct action.

In preparation for His coming, you should repent of sin. Jesus said, “Except you repent, you shall perish.” In Matthew 18:3, He said, “Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Do you know how many times repentance is mentioned in the New Testament? Seventy times. Do you know how many times the Second Coming of Christ is mentioned in the New Testament? Over three hundred times! That is the importance which the Holy Spirit gives to the truth of the Second Coming of Christ. It is mentioned in almost every book of the Bible.

John gives this great promise to all believers: “Now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” Jude says, “Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousand of his saints.” And the entire book of Revelation is given over to picturing the last things, the coming again of Christ. This book is your hope, and it has been called “the blessed hope” that Christ shall come again.

You say, “You think that Christ is coming? When is He coming?” Well, I am going to give you a date. I am going to give the date that Jesus gave. Some people came and said, “Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom of Israel?” And Jesus said, “It is not for you to know the times nor the seasons, which the Father has put in his own power.”

Jesus said in Matthew 24:36, “Of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” None of us knows the day or the hour. It may be a thousand years from now, it may be a hundred years, it could be today. There is no use speculating. There is no use trying to set a date, because Jesus said at that time He did not even know. He said, “The angels do not know; only my Father knows.” Then why should we try to speculate? But I tell you this. He told us to be ready, “For in such an hour as you think not the Son of man cometh.”

How many of you think He is coming today? Very few. You have not made your plans for Him to come this afternoon, have you? You’ve got the afternoon all planned. He said, “When you think I am not coming, that is when I am going to come.”

However, He did leave certain signs to guide us, certain indications that would lead us to believe that when these things are taking place, His Coming is drawing very near. I believe we see certain signs today which indicate that the climactic point of history is about to be reached.

I don’t pretend to know all the details and events that surround the Coming of Christ. I only know this: that He is coming! It provides hope for every one of us. We may be in a minority here. We may be suffering here. But the sufferings of the present time, Paul said, are not worthy to be compared to the glory that will be ours in the future.

That glory can be yours as well, but you must be ready to meet Christ at a moment’s notice. If you are not ready, get ready without delay. You can get ready by receiving Jesus Christ and repenting of your sins. It’s a very simple act. Present yourself to Jesus Christ and say, “Lord, from this moment on I’m Yours. I want to receive you, I want to follow you, I want to live for you.”

Trust in Him because He is coming again and you do not want to be left behind.

10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

——

Ladies and gentlemen, the hope of the second advent of Christ has filled the church for centuries. Our Lord Jesus Christ first uttered that prayer, “Thy kingdom come.” Someday that prayer will be answered. God’s kingdom will come; His church will be triumphant. But it will not come until there is direct intervention from heaven.

Now the world today is in a mess. I do not need to tell you that, for you know it. Anyone who can read a newspaper or watch a television knows that there is something wrong with the world in which we live. One of the great British philosophers, Bertrand Russell, said in 1958, “I wouldn’t give you a fifty-fifty chance that one person will be on this planet forty years from today.” That is the thinking of many of our people today. There is nothing but darkness and as the scientist looks out into the future. He sees the possibility of making a wonderful world. Then he looks into the human heart and realizes that some of the greatest scientific attempts of our day are building engines of destruction. So what could be the possibility of a glorious world if man is actually building bigger and better bombs and missiles for his own destruction?

C.S. Lewis declared, “It seems to be impossible to retain in any recognizable form our belief in the deity of Christ and the truth of the Christian revelation by abandoning or belittling the promised return of Jesus Christ.” Dr. Lewis accepts literally Paul’s definition of the Christian hope: “Looking for that blessed hope, and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Dr. Lewis says there are three reasons why people scoff at the coming of Christ. One, he says, because many professed Christians say it is a false teaching since the second coming of Christ did not take place in the early church as predicted. In other words, why has not Christ come up till now? Christ predicted He was coming. Two thousand years have passed and He has not come. That is exactly what the Bible predicted in 2 Peter, that in the last days scoffers would say, “Where is the promise of his coming?” So, you have a lot of people who scoff at the idea. They dismiss it, or they try to rationalize around it.

Second, the theory of evolution keeps many from believing in the second coming. If we believe man is progressing by himself, we will never accept the promise of Christ that He will return and bring an end to sin and death. In other words, those people who think we are getting better and better in every way, every day, they don’t want to talk about the coming of Christ. That interferes with their belief in the divinity of man, that man somehow is going to save himself. He doesn’t need God.

Third, the doctrine of Christ’s coming cuts across the plans and dreams of millions of people. They want to “eat, drink, and be merry” without interference in their selfish course of action. That is exactly the reason why the scoffers in Noah’s time refused to believe in a flood. You’re making money, you’ve got a comfortable home, you’ve got a fine family. Why should you want Christ to come? You would be embarrassed if He came. So you don’t want to believe it, and you cast it aside.

Surely the time has come for the church to give people the right view concerning the blessed hope, that Christ is coming again. Dr. Bryan Green, the former Episcopal rector of Birmingham, England, said: “I really feel we are going to move into a dark age of civilization. The only real light for Christians is a faith in the Second Coming of Christ.”

One day, by divine intervention and divine action in the coming of His Son, God is going to snap history in two. The climactic point of history will be reached. God is going to crown Jesus King of kings and Lord of it all. There will be a coronation in the sky. What a moment that is going to be! Only those who believe will be there in their white robes, and the orchestras of heaven are going to play. The choirs are going to sing; the angels will furnish the music. What a moment that is going to be!

One basic thing is taught in Scripture about the Second Coming — that we are to be prepared. Jesus said, “Be ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.” I want to ask you today: Are you ready? If you are not ready to meet Christ, get ready without delay. You can get ready by receiving Jesus Christ and repenting of your sins. It’s a very simple act. It’s a sincere act by which you present yourself to Jesus Christ and say, “Lord, from this moment on I’m Yours. I want to receive you, I want to follow you, I want to live for you.”

Trust in Him because He is coming again and you do not want to be left behind.

TEXT: Revelation 22:16-21

16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Last week, we began looking at the closing words of the Book of Revelation, the closing words of the Bible. Just prior to that, Jesus declared once again that He is coming quickly. But we don’t know when that coming will be. The question then becomes, How do we live in the world as we wait on the Second Coming? Fortunately, John gives us the answer in this final verse, writing, “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.” That is how we will survive in this dark and devastating world — by the “grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

We have defined grace in two paradigms “macro-grace” and “micro-grace.” Macro grace is the big picture of “the free and unmerited favor of God, as manifested in the salvation of sinners.” All who are saved are beneficiaries of this grace. Macro-grace is what gets us to Heaven; micro-grace is what gets us through this world.

Micro-grace is the seemingly small, everyday measures of grace that God grants us every day throughout the day. God’s grace is the reason why you can get out of bed each morning no matter the pains, anxieties, and distresses of the previous day. God’s grace, is what enables you to deal with difficult people, power through tough circumstances, and keep a good attitude when everything seems to be going wrong. Jeremiah talked about micro-grace when he wrote, “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” The world may not be faithful, but God is faithful in granting us His grace to tackle the world every day.

You and I need micro-grace — grace every day and every hour of the day — in order to make it through this life until Jesus returns or until we are called to go home to Him. Dave Zuleger said, “God will show up every morning with enough new grace to get us through all of today’s troubles. He will be there with us every morning until the moment we fall asleep that night, and he won’t leave us or neglect us.” That’s how we get through this life until the Lord returns; by relying on the daily grace of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,
Freely bestowed on all who believe!
You that are longing to see His face,
Will you this moment His grace receive?

Now, if you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, I urge you to trust in Him before He comes and you have no time to change. Here is how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and the consequences of sin.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

TEXT: Revelation 22:12-21

12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

The Free State of Glory (Part 60)

Dr. Walvoord and Dr. Zuck of Dallas Theological Seminary said of this passage, “While on the one hand an invitation is extended to those who will listen, a word of warning is also given to those who reject the revelation of this final book of the Bible. A dual warning is given against adding to it or subtracting from it. How great will be the judgment of those who despise this book and relegate it to the mystical experiences of an old man, thereby denying that it is the inspired Word of God. Rejecting the Word of God is rejecting God Himself. And those who deny His promises of blessing and subtract from His truths will receive His judgment and will have no part in the tree of life or access to the holy city. One further word of testimony was then given: Yes, I am coming soon. To this John replied in a brief prayer, Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. With this tremendous revelation completed, a final word of benediction was pronounced. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen. This expression, so common in other New Testament books, brings this final word from God to an end. For those who believe that Christ in His first coming provided salvation, there is the wonderful promise of His coming again to bring full and final deliverance. As the book began by introducing a revelation of Jesus Christ so it ends with the same thought that He is coming again. Probably no other book of Scripture more sharply contrasts the blessed lot of the saints with the fearful future of those who are lost. No other book of the Bible is more explicit in its description of judgment on the one hand and the saints’ eternal bliss on the other. What a tragedy that so many pass by this book and fail to fathom its wonderful truths, thereby impoverishing their knowledge and hope in Christ Jesus. God’s people who understand and appreciate these wonderful promises can join with John in his prayer, “Come, Lord Jesus.”

In Revelation 22:20, we have the final words of Jesus in all of the Bible. John introduces Him as the one who “testifieth of these things.” In case anyone doubts the contents of the Revelation, John is saying that it is Jesus himself who bears witness to what is in the book. Jesus Christ, the Alpha and Omega of History, says that these things are true. If you can’t believe Jesus, whom all of the Old Testament leads to and whom all of the New Testament speaks of, maybe there is no hope for you.

This statement is followed by Jesus’ own words: “Surely I come quickly. Amen.” The Greek word translated as “surely” is “a primary particle of strong affirmation.” Coming from Jesus, it denotes an absolute, ultimate truth. “Surely, I am certainly coming again.” From the Garden of Eden onward, history looked to the coming of Jesus Christ. And from His ascension onward till today, the present and the future look to His second coming. Robert Mounce said, “At the very close of the book is the confession that the answers to the problems of life do not lie in man’s ability to create a better world but in the return of the One whose sovereign power controls the course of human affairs.”

And the sovereignly powerful Son of God is not just coming again, but He says, “I come quickly.” Don’t you love when things happen quickly? No one likes waiting. But, even though Christ says He is coming quickly, millions of Christians have had to wait. The word translated as “quickly” means “speedily, suddenly, or without delay.” Scholars have stated that this word is meant o show the manner of Christ’s second coming rather than the time of His coming. When Christ comes, it will happen in a snap, speedily or swiftly. There won’t be a long process. There won’t be any time to get ready or to get out of the way. When Christ comes, He’ll be here, everyone will know it, and many won’t be prepared for it.

Christians, whether the time of Christ’s return is today or two hundred years from now, the only appropriate response is John’s: “Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” Amen means “so be it.” It is our affirmation of Christ’s declaration. We want Him to come and are glad to hear that He is coming quickly.

Now, if you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, I urge you to trust in Him before He comes and you have no time to change. Here is how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and the consequences of sin.
