So You Want to Be Rich and Famous? (Gospel Light Minute X #283)

The latest album from Christian rock band NEEDTOBREATHE contains an important message in the song “Money & Fame.” Lead singer Bear Reinhart explores the life of a man who lived as he pleased for years, seeking wealth and recognition, but later came to regret it. He sings:

I was sleeping with a loaded gun
I was scared of all things I’d done
Yeah, I know I’m not the only one
It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright now

I was chasing down a high again
Trying to take whatever I could get
But you know I had to pay for it
It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright now

Yeah, I’ve done some things that I regret
I was thinking I was fortunate
Now I’m working just to pay the debt
It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright now

The singer concludes with this lesson that we all would do well to take heed to:

What do you kids wanna know about now?
I made enough to make a young gun proud
Money and fame bring a man to shame
Ain’t no doubt about it
What do you kids wanna know about now?
I found the bottom from the top somehow
Money and fame bring a man to shame
Ain’t no doubt about it

Are you pursuing money and fame today? Are you willing to do “whatever it takes” to get it? If so, you will end up doing some things that you will come to regret. You may reach the top, but will, one day, find yourself at the bottom somehow. Life is about far more than success and gaining wealth. And people who focus on these things their whole lives are disappointed to find that reaching such goals doesn’t bring the fulfillment that they had hoped for. This is because their pursuit of money and fame only masked what they were actually searching for — happiness, joy, love, internal peace, and assurance about the future. These things last forever and keep our hearts at rest during times of turmoil and conflict. Money cannot buy such things. And the adoration of millions cannot supply them. Only a Person can give them to us. And that Person is Jesus Christ.

Christ alone can give us peace and joy. In John 16:33, He said, “…in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” He also said in John 15:11, “These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.”

Christ alone can love us unconditionally with a love that never ends. Romans 8:38-39 says, “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Christ alone can give us eternal life. In John 10:28, he said, “I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”

Christ alone can give us rest and set our hearts at ease in this turbulent world. In Matthew 11:28-29 he said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

You can have all of these things that money can’t buy and that fame can’t give you by giving your life to Jesus Christ today. No matter how much money or success you have, you will never gain these things that matter most. Let Jesus take over and let Him provide fulfillment, happiness, joy, peace, love, and eternal assurance about your future in a way that you can only dream of. Here is how:

First, you must realize and admit that you are a sinner and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20: “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Romans 3:23 reads: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” In fact, I am the chief of sinners, so don’t think that you’re alone.

Second, you must understand that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…” This is both spiritual death and physical death. We die physically and go to the grave because of sin and we die spiritually and go to hell because of sin.

Third, you must understand that you are on the road to hell because of your sins. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” The Bible says in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Fourth, you must accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Fifth, you must accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. Because of God’s love for you, he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the penalty for your sin. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Because God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins, we can live with God in Heaven for all eternity after we die.

Finally, with these facts in mind, you must repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me the following simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is trusting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!

Believe by faith. Share the faith. And keep the faith! God Bless You!

The Love of Money Trap, Part 3 (Pilgrim’s Progress According to the Bible #64)

TEXT: James 5:1-8

1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.

2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.

3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

4 Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.

5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.

6 Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.

7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.

8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.

The Love of Money Trap, Part 3 (Pilgrim’s Progress According to the Bible #64)

In this passage, James has soundly rebuked those whose desire for money leads them out of the ways of God. He has warned them of the misery that will come upon them because of their inordinate love of riches. He has also condemned them for letting their greed drive them to hurt other people who are less fortunate.

This desire is something that all of us, at one point or another, will likely struggle with. There will come a time when you will have to decide between a path that leads you closer to Jesus and a path that leads you to money and material things. You will have to decide, for as Jesus said, “Ye cannot serve God and money.” Continue reading

The Love of Money Trap, Part 2 (Pilgrim’s Progress According to the Bible #63)

The love of money is not a harmless indulgence as it often leads one down a path of sin in the pursuit of more money. One who loves money above all else will often have the tendency to do whatever it takes to get and keep more of it. That is the issue we will address today from verses 4, 5, and 6 of our passage. The Love of Money Trap, Part 1 (Pilgrim’s Progress According to the Bible #62)

The Bible says, “the love of money is the root of all evil.” Families have been torn apart, people have been killed, and livelihoods have been ruined all because of someone’s inordinate love of money. Many will look at the world and see evidence of the destructive influence of loving money. However, Christians are not immune from this sickness. Many will admit to struggling with loving money; some struggle with loving money more than they love God.

Of course, money is important. We need money to live, to eat, and to provide for our needs. The Bible says, “Money answereth all things”; that is, almost anything in this world can be taken care of with the right amount of money. The question is, how do we, as Christians, not succumb to the money trap? Continue reading

GLMX #198: Things Money Can’t Buy

burning-money-e1340332352315

Last month, the world was unfortunately introduced to a 22-year-old man named Elliot Rodger. His father is a Hollywood movie director, and he was raised in a $1 million home. He drove a Mercedes-Benz and a BMW. He bought $300 sunglasses, was chauffeured in limousines, attended private concerts, and flew first class. He had everything money could buy. But on Friday, May 23rd, he killed six people because, according to a YouTube video he left behind, he was frustrated and angry because women showed no interest in him.

With money and privileges that most people could only dream of, you would think that Elliot Rodger would be one of the happiest people on earth. But he wasn’t. By his own admittance, he was angry and bitter at the world. While psychologists and psychiatrists debate his mental state and try to come up with a plausible reason why this man would kill his own roommates and then kill three others, one thing we know for sure is that no matter how much money he had, he was not happy, content, or satisfied with his life.

Sadly, today, many people focus on pursuing things that money can buy. And what is even more sad is that people actually look for fulfillment and meaning in these things. They look for happiness in cars, houses, success, sex, money, and more money. They quickly find out, though, that life is about far more than success and gaining material things. They realize that what they are really searching for is happiness, joy, love, internal peace and assurance for the future — all things that money can’t buy.

These things last forever and keep our hearts at rest during times of turmoil and conflict. Money cannot buy such things. Only a person can give them to us. And that person is Jesus Christ.

GLMX #194: Mr. Bloomberg, God and People Appreciate all of the Good Things You Have Done for Mankind, but You are Still On Your Way to Hell; Here is the True and Only Way You Can Go to Heaven

Michael Bloomberg

Michael Bloomberg

Michael Bloomberg is a very accomplished man. He is the former mayor of one of the most important cities in the world, New York City, having served in that position for twelve years. He is extremely wealthy and is worth $33 billion. He is also the founder of Bloomberg L.P., the global financial and media company which operates Bloomberg TV, Bloomberg News, and a radio network.

Mr. Bloomberg has also done a lot of good things for people and for the world. Through his organization, Bloomberg Philanthropies Foundation, he has given hundreds of millions of dollars to health institutions, to fight tobacco use, to support families living with cancer, and to support educational institutions. He has won numerous awards and honors for his achievements.

In a recent interview with the New York Times, Michael Bloomberg reflected on the fact that, due to his age, he may not have as much time as he would like to see his latest initiative — investing $50 million to stop gun violence — come to fruition. He said, “I am telling you if there is a God, when I get to heaven I’m not stopping to be interviewed. I am heading straight in. I have earned my place in heaven. It’s not even close.”

Despite his confident, perhaps even arrogant words, Mr. Bloomberg apparently knows very little about what it takes to get into Heaven.

You see, Mr. Bloomberg is depending on his good works to buy himself a ticket into Heaven. However, good works cannot save anyone or get them into Heaven. The Bible says in Ephesians 2:8-9, “By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” The Bible also says it is “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us.”

Works cannot save us and get us into Heaven, and wealth cannot get us into Heaven either. Just as money cannot buy happiness, money cannot buy your way into Heaven. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 19:23-24, “That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven….It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.” In the book of Acts, Paul told a man, “Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.”

Our accomplishments, education, or status in life cannot get us into Heaven. You can achieve much, know much, and be a successful individual, and still not even come close to entering the pearly gates.

The bottom line is: there is nothing we can do in our own strength that can save us. Michael Bloomberg’s good works, wealth, and accomplishments will not get him into Heaven. Even if you do more good deeds, have more money, and accomplish more than Mr. Bloomberg, you can still die and go to Hell.

So, how does one get into Heaven?

Let’s look at Ephesians 2:8-9 again. It says, “By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

First, it says, “for by grace…” Grace is undeserved favor. This means that acceptance into Heaven is not something given to us based on our works or because we deserve it. It is given to us inspite of the fact that we do not deserve it.

Second, it says, “are ye saved…” What does this grace save us from? It saves us from our sins and from the punishment of sin which is Hell and eternal separation from God.

Third, it says, “by faith…” Faith is the means by which we accept the grace that saves us. This grace is a gift from God provided through the sacrifice of His only Son, Jesus Christ. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” The only way you can get into Heaven is if you accept Jesus Christ by faith as your Savior. You must believe, by faith, in the sacrifice that He made on the cross. When you reach the pearly gates, your works (no matter how good), your wealth (no matter how much), and your accomplishments (no matter how great), will not get you in. But Jesus’ work on the cross — the soul-saving sacrifice that He became there — will ensure that you can enjoy the riches and wealth of Heaven for eternity.

Today, you can accept Jesus Christ as your Savior so that you can be delivered from your sins and the punishment of sin and so that you can have eternal life in Heaven with God. The Bible says in Romans 10:9 & 13, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you want to trust Jesus Christ for salvation today, you can pray a short prayer to let God know about your decision. Just repeat after me and mean it from your heart.

Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and I want to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God. Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. For more information to help you grow in your new found faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

Believe by faith. Share the faith. And keep the faith! God Bless You!
