How Jesus Brought the Light to His Dark Mission Field and How We Should Bring It to Ours (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 104 / Day 471 since Jan. 1, 2016)

TEXT: Matthew 4:23-25:

23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.

25 And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.

———-

After preaching the Gospel every day for 367 days straight throughout the 2016 presidential campaign season, I am preaching the Gospel every day throughout the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s term. If you think a new president being in office is the only thing needed to save America and ‘make America great again’, you are woefully deceived. The church must follow through and “keep the main thing the main thing: and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents, politicians, and people, but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey the Lord’s Great Commission which is to, ‘Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature,’ and who have refused to obey God’s repeated commands to ‘pray without ceasing’ for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders.” So, we encourage you to pray for the new president, but not to get caught up in the political happenings like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord. And that is what this campaign is all about.

This campaign is inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says, “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” Acts 5:42 which says, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.” And 2 Timothy 2:4 which says, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”

This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of those saints who still loves to hear the “Old, old story of Jesus and His love” — As another hymn says, “For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.” This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and understand the Gospel and be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell. This is message number 102, day 469 since Jan. 1, 2016.

Richard Baxter said, “I like to hear a man dwell much on the same essentials of Christianity. For we have but one God, and one Christ, and one faith to preach; and I will not preach another Gospel to please men with variety, as if our Saviour and our Gospel had grown stale.”

In this passage, Matthew continues to tell us about the beginning of Jesus’ ministry in Galilee. During this time, Jesus’ “fame” grew throughout the region including in “Syria” and on the eastern side of the Jordan River. The region referred to as Syria here was situated in northern Galilee. The mention of “Decapolis” refers to an area of ten cities founded by Greeks under the authority of Alexander the Great. Jesus carried out three major tasks in His ministry.

First, Jesus taught the people. Matthew says he “went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues.” Teaching is the act of explaining and expounding on Scripture. Even though people in those days were closer to the revealed Word of God, they still needed someone to help them understand it from time to time. In those days, synagogues were built in any area that had a significant Jewish population. Any learned adult male could teach in the synagogue and distinguished speakers, such as Jesus would have been considered, were especially welcome. Jesus took the time to teach people, line upon line, what the Word of God meant for their daily lives.

Second, Jesus “preached the Gospel of the kingdom.” While teaching is the explanation of Scripture, preaching is declaration aimed at the conversion of people. William Barclay said, “Preaching is the uncompromising proclamation of certainties.” Jesus took the time to reason with people and explain Scripture to them, but then He called them to act — to make a decision regarding what they would believe and do. Today, we have some churches that focus mostly on teaching the Bible and explaining Scripture. These people can debate the finer points of doctrine to no end. But unfortunately, many seldom act on what they know and don’t witness for Christ so that other people can be saved. Then we have churches that focus mostly on proclaiming the good news of the Gospel. They do well by urging people to make a decision for Christ, but unfortunately some don’t teach and explain the Scripture and they end up with a congregation of spiritual babies. The church must do both in order to be effective.

Third, Jesus took care of people’s physical needs. Matthew says He was “healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people… and those which were possessed with devils.” Jesus was not just concerned with people’s spiritual condition; He was concerned about their physical well-being as well. Jesus would probably not have attracted as many people as He did if He was only preaching and teaching. Often, people have to be drawn in by the meeting of their physical needs before they will listen to someone talking about their spiritual needs. Today, though, we have churches standing at both extremes: some let taking care of physical needs overshadow preaching and teaching; others do a great job preaching and teaching, but neglect the physical needs of their church members. Again, we must do both in order to be effective.

Every generation of Christians is tempted to try something new in order to bring people into the kingdom of heaven. But this blueprint that Jesus laid out by His actions is the only plan we need and the only one that will work. We must recommit ourselves every day to teaching, preaching, and meeting the needs of others.

Now for those who do not know Jesus Christ — the teacher, preacher, healer, and miracle-worker — as their Savior, allow me to show you how you can enter the kingdom of heaven today.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! Jesus Explains Why He Has to Go Back to Heaven, Part 6 (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 266)

JJMessage

TEXT: John 16:12-15:

12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

———-

Today, I am continuing the daily Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign sermon series, which is aimed at sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with unbelievers and reminding Christians, in this important election year, to keep the main thing the main thing — and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents, politicians, and people, but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey the Lord’s Great Commission which is to, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” and who have refused to obey God’s repeated commands to “pray without ceasing” for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders. Yes, you should pray for the right candidate to win; yes, you should vote for the candidate that the Lord gives you peace about voting for. But, don’t get caught up in it like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord.

This is message number 266.

Henry Blackaby said, “When God spoke to Moses and others in the Old Testament, those events were encounters with God. An encounter with Jesus was an encounter with God for the disciples. In the same way, an encounter with the Holy Spirit is an encounter with God for you.”

Notice the emphasis on the fact that the Holy Spirit will draw attention to Jesus Christ in this passage. Jesus says, “He shall glorify ME: for he shall receive of MINE… All things that the Father hath are MINE: he shall take of MINE, and shall shew it unto you.” The entire job description of the Holy Spirit is wrapped up in His mission to draw people and point people to Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is like an amplifier for the Messiah. He increases, if you will, the broadcast signal of the Saviour. He draws the disciples further into Christ, and, as we saw in a few previous messages, He points sinful man to Christ as well. It is all about Jesus.

The work of the Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus. If the work of any Christian is not glorifying Jesus then he cannot say that he is being led by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit takes what belongs to Jesus and shows it — opens it up, reveals it — to the disciples and to the world. Of course, this is the same as showing the Heavenly Father to the world as Jesus did, because God the Father and Jesus the Son are one.

The chief way in which the Holy Spirit takes the spiritual truths of the Father and the Son and shows them to believers is through the Word of God. The writers of the New Testament were inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit wrote thru them — explaining, expounding, and expanding on the message of Jesus Christ. One commentator likened it to the unfolding of a flower. The Holy Spirit was not creating or giving new knowledge; He was showing believers more of the knowledge that God had already given through Christ.

There is no new revelation in the body of Christ. No one can truly say that they have something to add to the Word of God. There is only the Holy Spirit opening our eyes to truths that are already present in the Word so that we can apply those truths to the situations that we face every day.

Another theologian said, “We do not study the Word of God in order to ‘argue religion’ with people or to show off our grasp of spiritual things. We study the Word to see Jesus Christ, to know God better, to glorify Him in our lives. As we witness in this hostile world, the Spirit uses the Word He has taught us; and we share Jesus Christ with the lost. It is our job to witness; it is the Spirit’s job to convict.”

Like the Holy Spirit, we ought to constantly be pointing people back to Jesus. We ought to take the light that God has given us and use it to show others the way of salvation.

Mary Dagworthy James wrote:

All for Jesus! All for Jesus!
All my being’s ransomed powers;
All my thoughts and words and doings,
All my days and all my hours.

Let my hands perform His bidding;
Let my feet run in His ways;
Let mine eyes see Jesus only;
Let my lips speak forth His praise.

Since mine eyes were fixed on Jesus,
I’ve lost sight of all beside—
So enchained my spirit’s vision,
Looking at the Crucified.

If you want to accept the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ and the entrance of the Holy Spirit into your life right now, here is how:

1. Accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20: “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Romans 3:23 reads: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

2. Accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

3. Accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” The Bible says in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

4. Accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

5. Accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

6. With these facts in mind, please repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Dear friend, if you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me this simple prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again.

This is message number 265.

Alan Redpath said, “We need men so possessed by the Spirit of God that God can think His thoughts through our minds, that He can plan His will through our actions, that He can direct His strategy of world evangelization through His Church.”

Jesus continues telling the disciples of why He will send the Holy Spirit to them after He returns to Heaven. He says, “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.” There was a lot more that Jesus wanted to tell the disciples, but He did not want to give them too much information all at once. They were barely able to process what Jesus had already told them in the last few hours. We have spent dozens of messages deciphering what He meant.

Instead of telling the disciples everything that He wants to tell them at the moment, Jesus would send the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit — the Spirit of truth — would guide the disciples into all truth. Remember, Jesus is the truth. So, the Holy Spirit’s process of guiding the disciples into truth was simply a way for them to get more “into” Jesus — to learn more about Him, to know more about His purpose.

That is why the Holy Spirit does not speak of himself, but of the Son; just as the Son did not speak of Himself, but of the Father. Jesus came to show the world the true nature of God. And the Holy Spirit came to continue to show believers the true nature of Jesus’ work.

This is why we must guard against those who say they accept what Jesus said, but not what the other New Testament writers said as though they were less than inspired. The truth is that the New Testament writers expound on and explain many of the things that Jesus only hinted at. For example, it was the Holy Spirit who revealed to the disciples that the Church was not for the Jews only, but for Gentiles as well. It was the Holy Spirit who revealed to the early Christians that many of the ritualistic Jewish customs were no longer binding under the New Covenant. Without the Holy Spirit, the Church would not have made the progress it has made for the glory of God.

While most theologians consider the Bible to be “closed canon” — meaning that the revelation that the Holy Spirit gave to the Bible writers is complete and that nothing will be added to the Word of God — there is no denying the fact that the Holy Spirit still carries out the task of guiding believers into truth today. We are confronted with lies and Satanic deception that first-century believers did not contend with. The Holy Spirit serves as a guide and a guard to our hearts and minds letting us know when something that is being taught by the world, the devil, or false teachers in the church is not in line with the truth of Jesus Christ and the Word of God.

Jesus said, “whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” This is why we are not afraid of or deceived by the devil’s tricks. The Holy Spirit delivers messages directly from Jesus that apply to our present situation, enabling us to stand tall in the face of Satanic opposition. Knowing what the Holy Spirit is doing in our lives and in the church, we ought to say with the songwriter:

Come Holy Spirit, move on me.
By your anointing, set me free
Pour out new wine on this heart of mine.
Come Holy Spirit, move on me.

If you want to accept the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ and the entrance of the Holy Spirit into your life right now, here is how:

TEXT: John 16:7-11:

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;

10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord.

This is message number 264.

Marcus Dods said, “The world and its prince will be judged. To adhere to them rather than to Christ is to cling to a doomed cause, a sinking ship.”

We have looked at two of the ways in which the Holy Spirit works in the world. First, it convicts man of sin. Second, it convinces the world of its own unrighteousness and of Jesus’ righteousness. The third way in which the Holy Spirit works in the world has to do with the ruler of the world system. Jesus says the Holy Spirit will reprove, convict, and convince the world “of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.”

Satan thought he had won a great victory by putting Jesus on trial before the Jews and the Romans. But, in actuality, it was he himself who was being judged. Satan’s plan to keep control of the world by killing Jesus was put to the test and found wanting because, by Jesus’ death and resurrection, Satan’s rule was broken and he was defeated. Satan was the one who walked away from that fight with his head down and his hands bound.

However, Satan still roams the earth seeking to deceive and enslave mankind. What he doesn’t tell sinful man is that he is already defeated. He is a criminal, his sentence has already been passed, and he is awaiting execution. That is where the Holy Spirit comes in. The Holy Spirit seeks to convince man of Satan’s judgment. He seeks to show sinful men that they are now following a leader who has already lost the war.

At the end of the American Revolutionary War, communication methods were so slow that several battles were fought between the Americans and the British after the British had surrendered in Yorktown. These battles, no matter the outcome, were of no consequence because the British had already been defeated. However, the soldiers in the field didn’t know that yet. They wouldn’t know until a messenger came and told them that the war was over.

In the spiritual realm, the Holy Spirit is that messenger communicating to man that the devil has lost and that God has won. Dr. John Walvoord and Dr. Roy B. Zuck said, “People in rebellion should take note of Satan’s defeat and fear the Lord who holds the power to judge. As the fact of coming judgment is proclaimed, the Spirit convicts people and prepares them for salvation.”

Christians today can go forward in the power of the Holy Spirit, knowing that we are led by the victorious Christ, with a mission to get others to join the winning side.

One day, we all can sing along to the hymn by W. Chatterton Dix:

Hallelujah! Sing to Jesus!
His the scepter, his the throne;
Hallelujah! His the triumph,
his the victory alone.

Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion
thunder like a mighty flood.
Jesus, out of every nation,
has redeemed us by his blood.

You can join the winning side today by accepting the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ and the entrance of the Holy Spirit into your life right now, here is how:

Jesus Explains Why He Has to Go Back to Heaven, Part 2 (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 262)

TEXT: John 16:5-7:

5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

This is message number 261.

Henry Alford said, “Each man’s conscience has some glimmering of light on each of these; some consciousness of guilt, some sense of right, some power of judgment of what is transitory and worthless; but all these are unreal and impractical, till the convicting work of the Spirit has wrought in him.”

Jesus told His disciples that when He was gone, the Holy Spirit would come to live inside of them, comfort them, and teach them about Himself. But the Holy Spirit also has a role to play in the world, which Jesus goes on to describe as follows: “When the Holy Spirit is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.” The word “reprove” can also be translated as “convict,” but the Greek word has a broader meaning which includes to expose, to refute, and to convince.

Man is proud. He will not admit on his own that he is a sinner. Even though he is walking in darkness, he thinks that the way he is going is right and will not change on his own. That is where the Holy Spirit comes in. He enters to reprove, convict, and convince the sinner of the error of his ways. When a Christian shares the Gospel with an unbeliever, the Holy Spirit is working alongside him, aiming to convince that unbeliever of the truth. Merrill C. Tenney said, “The Spirit does not merely accuse men of sin, he brings to them an inescapable sense of guilt so that they realize their shame and helplessness before God.” Of course, the devil and the unbeliever’s flesh are there too, aiming to keep that person in bondage.

The increasingly humanistic bent of our society has people believing that man is basically good. If asked how they would describe themselves, most people will tell you, ‘Yeah, I’ve done a few bad things, but I think I’m a pretty good person.’ God wants to get man to the place where he agrees with God’s word. That “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” That “there is none righteous, no not one.” That “they have all gone aside out of the way; there is none that doeth good, none that seeketh after God.” Only the Holy Spirit of God can convince a man of this truth.

R.A. Torrey said that one Sunday while he was preaching he noticed a man whom he had never seen before sitting in the front pew. His manner of dress indicated that he was quite wealthy, a man of the world. But the man’s eyes were riveted upon him in such a way that Torrey couldn’t help but to keep turning back to the man and preach directly to him. Later, after the service was over, he went to talk to the man. The man said, “I don’t know what is the matter with me. I never felt this way before in all my life. I started out this afternoon to meet up with some of my friends to spend the afternoon gambling. As I passed by the park across the street, some of young men were holding an open air meeting and I stopped to listen. When the speaker finished, I went on down the street. But I had not gone far when some strange power took hold of me and brought me back and I stayed through the meeting. Then one of your deacons invited me to dinner and then to this meeting.” Here the man stopped and started sobbing. He said, “Oh, I don’t know what is the matter with me. I feel awful. I never felt this way before in all my life.” Pastor Torrey told him, “I know what is the matter with you. You are under conviction of sin; the Holy Spirit is dealing with you.” And he led the man to Christ.

That is why Jesus went back to Heaven — so that He could send the Holy Spirit to aid His disciples and all believers in the evangelistic effort.

Daniel Whittle wrote:

I know not how this saving faith
to me He did impart;
Nor how believing in His Word
wrought peace within my heart.

I know not how the Spirit moves,
convincing men of sin;
Revealing Jesus through the Word,
creating faith in Him.

I know not why God’s wondrous grace
To me He hath made known,
Nor why, unworthy, Christ in love
Redeemed me for His own.

If you are ready to accept the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit into your life right now, here is how:

Amen.

This is message number 261.

Ray Stedman said, “Remember that grace and truth cannot finally be crucified. Remember that all the high things that make humanity beautiful cannot be forever laid in the dust, spattered with blood. And most of all, remember that He who rose from the dead, rose to pour out His Holy Spirit into human lives, and, by that Spirit, to make available to any individual all the fullness of Himself, twenty-four hours a day.”

Jesus says, “But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?” These words remind us, once again, that, for Jesus, His going away was not something He looked on with sadness. For Him, going away was something He looked forward to, was even eager for, because it meant He was going back to His Father, the One who had sent Him.

Jesus’ disciples, however, did not share this sentiment. They were concerned about what would happen to them once Jesus was gone. Jesus said, “None of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?” Now, Peter had, of course, asked this question in chapter 13. But he was asking with a view toward himself and the other disciples: ‘Lord, what will happen to us when You are gone?’ Henry Morris said, Peter’s question “had not really indicated a serious inquiry as to Jesus’ destination. Peter was diverted immediately and he made no real attempt to find out where Jesus was going. He had been concerned with the thought of parting with Jesus, not with that of the Master’s destination.”

Because of their pending separation from Jesus, sorrow had filled the hearts of the disciples. But, Jesus says, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.” Even though the truth caused sorrow for the disciples, Jesus told them what would happen next. Unlike the disciples, He was not just concerned about Himself going back home, He was concerned about the disciples who would be left behind.

The reason why it was expedient (or beneficial) for the disciples that Jesus return to the Father is because then, and only then, would the Comforter — the Holy Spirit — the Spirit of Truth — come to them. The disciples did not understand this at the moment, but the Holy Spirit coming to them would be better than Jesus being with them physically because the Holy Spirit would actually begin to live inside of them. With Jesus’ physical presence, the disciples tried to emulate their Master from the outside in, but with the Holy Spirit’s presence inside of them, they would be empowered to live like Christ from the inside out.

The powerful thing for us to remember is that, oftentimes, what we deem a reason for sorrow is actually God doing something that will benefit us. And the Holy Spirit is one of the greatest gifts that God has given to Man through His Son Jesus Christ.

George Croly wrote:

Spirit of God, who dwells within my heart,
wean it from sin, through all its pulses move.
Stoop to my weakness, mighty as you are,
and make me love you as I ought to love.

Teach me to feel that you are always nigh;
teach me the struggles of the soul to bear,
to check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh;
teach me the patience of unceasing prayer.

Teach me to love you as your angels love,
one holy passion filling all my frame:
the fullness of the heaven-descended Dove;
my heart an altar, and your love the flame.

If you are ready to accept the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit into your life right now, here is how:

The Love of Christ and the Hatred of the World, Part 13 (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 260)

TEXT: John 16:1-4:

1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

This is message number 260.

John Bunyan said, “Therefore, I bind these lies and slanderous accusations to my person as an ornament; it belongs to my Christian profession to be vilified, slandered, reproached and reviled, and since all this is nothing but that, as God and my conscience testify, I rejoice in being reproached for Christ’s sake.”

Knowing that they would be persecuted, the disciples could take comfort in the fact that the anger of the Jews and the religious establishment had been aimed at Jesus first. The reason why is because, as Jesus says, “They have not known the Father, nor me.” In other words, Jesus does not want His disciples to take the persecution that they face personally.

The disciples have to recognize the dark, spiritual forces that are at work in the world. Behind the persecution is the devil who seeks to stop the spread of the Gospel. Jesus knew this, and that is why He was able to say, ‘Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.’ Stephen, the first recorded Christian martyr, prayed the same thing as he was being stoned to death. He knew that the religious establishment and the secular world remained under the influence of the devil.

Jesus tells His disciples this that they may remember what He has told them when they face persecution of their own. Dr. John Walvoord and Dr. Roy B. Zuck said, “Jesus gave this warning to His disciples about coming persecution in order to strengthen their faith. By recognizing His knowledge of the future they would grow in their confidence in Him. Jesus had not told them of this earlier because His presence shielded them from such attacks,” but soon they would be exposed as the body of Christ on earth.

Jesus’ shielding of His disciples from the attacks of the world is reminiscent of His words to the Jewish religious leaders who asked Him why He and His disciples did not fast. Jesus said, “Do the friends of the groom fast while the groom is with them?” Of course not! When the groom is with His friends, it is time to celebrate. But, Jesus said He would not be with His disciples always, and when He was gone, then it would be time for the disciples to fast. In the same manner, Jesus’ going away would signal the end of the disciples’ general immunity from persecution. They would have to face it for a while now, but they could always keep in mind that one day, the bridegroom, Jesus Christ, would return and they could rest from the labors and pain of this world.

Philip Phillips wrote:

The world delights to persecute
The children of the Lord;
‘Twas always so in ages past,
As told us in His word.

The more the world revile and scorn,
The more let zeal abound;
We are not greater than our Lord,
Whose brow with thorns was crowned.

Go on still trusting in the Lord,
His word will never fail;
Lo, He is with us till the end;
Go on, we shall prevail.

Despite the persecution and hatred that you will face, if you are ready to receive Jesus Christ into your life right now, here is how:
