GLMX #217: You’re Invited to the Wedding of the Ages

A week ago, one of the most anticipated weddings in recent memory took place. Actor George Clooney, who was quoted as saying that he would never get married again over 20 years ago, tied the knot with British-Lebanese lawyer and activist, Amal Alamuddin. The beautiful wedding ceremony took place in the ‘floating city’ of Venice.

Despite all of the negative things that happen in the world, there are two things mankind gets great joy out of — the birth of a child and the marriage of a man and a woman. The union of two people in a marriage ceremony is an amazing and touching experience. People spend lots of money and often go into debt to pull off the perfect wedding.

God even uses the act of marriage to represent one of the greatest future events in the history of the world — the final reunion of Himself with His creation. Mankind was separated from God when our ancestors, Adam and Eve, decided to disobey God in the Garden of Eden. At that point, God put in place a plan to remove the barrier of sin and imperfection between Himself and His creation. This plan will culminate in a majestic wedding ceremony in heaven. This ceremony is often called the “Marriage Supper of the Lamb.”

Listen to how the Bible describes this event in Revelation 19:7-9: “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to [God]: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And [the angel] saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb.”

I mentioned already that the “marriage” spoken of here is the reunion of God with His creation. But, perhaps, you still have some questions such as: Why is it called the “Marriage Supper of the Lamb”? Who is the Lamb? And who is getting “married” to the Lamb? TEXT: John 14:1-3: “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”

In previous lessons, we have learned much about how we ought to live the Christian life on this Earth. However, Jesus Christ made it clear to His disciples that one day He is coming back to take us out of this world and take us to Heaven to be with Him. He promised us that He was going to prepare a place for us in Heaven and that He would return to take us there.

When Jesus ascended to Heaven after His resurrection, two angels appeared to His disciples and said to them, “Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” In this lesson, we will ask and answer several questions about the second coming of Jesus Christ. That is the great event we have to look forward to.

In our last lesson, we asked three questions, and got the answers from God’s Word:

1. Who is Jesus coming for? Jesus Christ is coming back for believers.

2. When will Jesus return? The Bible tells us that no one knows the time when Jesus Christ will return, but that when He comes, it will be sudden and unexpected.

3. What will happen to believers? Two things will happen to believers when the Lord returns: First, we will attend the “Judgment Seat of Christ” where rewards for Christian service will be given. Second, we will attend the “Marriage Supper of the Lamb” where we, as the Bride of Christ, will be joined to the Lord Jesus to love Him and to be loved by Him forever.

Today, we are going to look at three more questions that will help us as we get to know Jesus Christ as our coming king.

1. What will happen to those who are left behind? While the believers are in Heaven with Christ, the unbelievers will begin going through a time of great trouble here on the earth. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 24:21, “Then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.”

2. What will happen after the Tribulation period? 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8 says, “the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.” At God’s appointed time, the Lord Jesus will return to the earth with His believers and His mighty angels. He will come in great power and glory. He will destroy the Antichrist and his followers and put an end to this time of tribulation.

3. What will happen at the end of the 1,000 years? Revelation 20:7 tells us “when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison.” He will again go out and deceive many people, convincing them to attack the city of Jerusalem in a last-ditch effort to defeat Jesus Christ. This time, fire will come down from Heaven to destroy them, and Satan will be cast into the lake of fire, from which he will never be released. Revelation 20:10 says, “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone… and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”

The communion between God and His creation will be restored to perfection, and we as believers will live forever in harmony with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. These events should inspire us to live faithfully throughout our time on this earth as we wait for our coming King.

However, Jesus Christ made it clear to His disciples that one day He is coming back to take us out of this world and take us to Heaven to be with Him. That is the great event we have to look forward to.

1. Who is Jesus coming for? Jesus Christ is coming back for believers.

Luke 17:35-36 says, “Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.” When Jesus comes again, there will be a great separation — the believers will be separated from the unbelievers. The believers will go to be with the Lord Jesus; and the unbelievers will be left behind.

2. When will Jesus return? The Bible does not tell us the time when Jesus Christ will return. In fact Matthew 24:36 tells us, “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” When Christ comes to take His believers to be with Him, He will come suddenly and unexpectedly — like “a thief in the night.”

In a moment, “in the twinkling of an eye,” every believer will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. This includes both those who have died and those who are living when Christ comes. The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17: “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

Most of the world will not be expecting Jesus’ return, however true believers will be looking forward to the second coming of Christ.

3. What will happen to believers? After we are caught up to be with the Lord, we will be judged for the works that we did after we became followers of Jesus Christ. This judgment is called “the Judgment Seat of Christ,” and only believers will be there. 2 Corinthians 5:10 says, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”

Some believers will receive great rewards at this judgment because they were faithful in serving the Lord Jesus. Others will receive few rewards, or none at all because they did not live for the Lord and serve Him faithfully.

After the Judgment Seat of Christ, “the Marriage Supper of the Lamb” will take place. There is no way for us to describe how beautiful and wonderful this event will be. As the Bride of Christ, we will be joined to the Lord Jesus — to love Him and to be loved by Him forever.

The judgment seat of Christ and the marriage supper of the Lamb are two great events that we as believers have to look forward to. These events should inspire us to live faithfully throughout our time on this earth as we wait for our coming King. Lord willing, in our next lesson, we will look at three more questions regarding Jesus Christ as our coming King.

A Marriage Made in Heaven for Real

100 Days of Preaching the Gospel #93 | with Daniel Whyte III

SCRIPTURE: Revelation 19:1-10: “And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God: For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand. And again they said, Alleluia And her smoke rose up for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia. And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God. And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

So far in this series on the second coming of Jesus Christ and the end times, I believe it would be safe to say that we have seen very little happy moments. The end times are not “good times” for the world. We have seen judgment after judgment, destruction, devastation, and the unfortunate defiance of man against God. In the past two messages, we saw how Satan and the antichrist gathered all the armies of the world to Armageddon to fight against the return of Jesus Christ. Of course, they will fail in this attempt. Not only will they be utterly defeated, but we saw yesterday how the entire satanic world system — religious and political Babylon — will be utterly destroyed under the judgment of the seventh vial — the last of God’s judgments on the earth.

Today, we come to a truly happy moment in John’s prophecy. This moment takes place in Heaven just before Jesus Christ and his saints descend to earth to set up the Millennial Kingdom. This event is called the “marriage supper of the Lamb” or the “marriage of the Lamb”. Let’s look at three significant aspects of this wonderful event.

1. First of all, this marriage is preceded by a celebration.

2. Secondly, this marriage is perfected by a consummation.

3. Thirdly, and finally, this marriage is populated only by Christians.
