God’s Layaway Plan (Gospel Light Minute X #464)

God’s Layaway Plan (GLMX #464)

This is the “chief of sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, with the Gospel Light Minute X Podcast #464 titled, “God’s Layaway Plan” I’m here to remind you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me.

Many of the larger stores throughout the nation have a “layaway” plan for the sale of merchandise through which a purchaser can have an item held for him by making a small down payment on it. The article is held by the store until paid for and then delivered to the customer.

God has a “layaway” plan for those who have received His Son as their Savior. In common with the plans frequently used in merchandising, it has to do with something that is laid away for future possession. Unlike the store “layaway” plan in which the buyer pays the full price as he is able, God’s plan has to do with holding for us in Heaven something already paid for.

In his letter to the Colossian believers, the Apostle Paul spoke of “the hope which is laid up [literally “laid away”] for you in heaven”. That hope includes a number of wonderful things.

It is the hope of the completion of perfection of our salvation. When we receive Christ as our Savior, God saves us from the penalty of sin. As we trust Jesus Christ day by day, He delivers us from the power of sin. When the redeemed stand in His glorious presence, they shall be forever delivered from the presence of sin. We shall be like Christ in perfection.

That hope includes the redemption of the body. Our present bodies are subject to sickness and death. But these mortal bodies shall give way to immortal, spiritual bodies fit for Heaven and eternity (See I Corinthians 15:52-54; Romans 8:23)!

The believer looks forward also to a heavenly inheritance. The Apostle Peter wrote of it in I Peter 1:3-5, saying that we have been “…begotten…again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, RESERVED in heaven for you, who are KEPT by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time”.

No earthly “layaway” plan both reserves the article for the customer and keeps the customer for the article. God’s plan does. Our inheritance is reserved in Heaven for us. We are kept by God’s power so that we may receive our inheritance!

God has laid away this heavenly inheritance for His children. As the Apostle Paul expresses it Romans 8:17, “if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ…”. This glorious inheritance is not something worked for and earned. It is God’s gracious gift to His children. Christ purchased it for us through the shedding of His Blood.

Lost members of Adam’s fallen race become children of God by receiving God’s Son as their Savior. The Bible states in John 1:12, “as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” For those who have trusted Him as their Savior, Christ has gone to prepare a place among the many mansions in His Father’s House. Jesus Christ said in John 14:1-3, “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”

Have you a hope laid away in Heaven? Do you have confidence concerning eternal things? If not, you need to receive Christ as your Savior. As a result of trusting Him as your Savior, you pass from spiritual death to spiritual life now, and in the life to come shall not come into condemning judgment for sin. Jesus Christ said in John 5:24, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life”. Now is the time to trust Him. Do it now. Now is the only time you have. Do not put off what you should do now. The Bible says Acts 16:31, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved”.

If you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour in the free pardon of your sins. Allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Jesus Christ for your souls salvation from the power of sin and from the punishment of sin in that awful place called Hell. Please pray with me what is called the sinner’s prayer: Holy Father God, I acknowledge that I am a sinner and I admit that I have sinned against You and that I have broken Your Ten Commandments. I have lied before. I have stolen things before. I have lusted after people and things before. I have dishonored and disobeyed my parents. I have taken Your holy Name in vain. For Jesus Christ’s sake, please have mercy and grace upon my soul and forgive me of all of my sins, my failures, and my faults. As I now believe in Your Holy Son the Lord Jesus Christ. I believe that He suffered, bled, and died on the cross for my sins, was buried and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and help me to repent of my sins past. Help me to turn from my old, evil life and follow You in the new life. For it is in Your Name I pray. Amen.

Giving Thanks (Gospel Light Minute X #463)

Giving Thanks (GLMX #463)

This is the “chief of sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, with the Gospel Light Minute X Podcast #463 titled, “Giving Thanks” I’m here to remind you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me.

WHO IS THE ONE YOU THANK?
Every year in November we celebrate Thanksgiving. We gather together with family and friends to enjoy food and companionship and to consider everything for which we are grateful.

But giving thanks implies there is someone to be thanked. Who do you show gratitude to when you sit down to dinner?

The Bible says that you are to give your thanks to God—Ephesians 5:20 says, “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”.

WHY THANK GOD?
Why should you be grateful to God? First, because He created you—The Bible says in Genesis 1:26, “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness”.

Also because God provides you with everything you need to survive, from the air you breathe to the food you eat. The Bible says, “In every thing give thanks” for “Every good gift and every perfect gift … cometh down from the Father …”.

But above all you should thank God for His sacrifice for you—His Son Jesus, Who came into our world to save you. The Bible says in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”.

WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SAVED?
Why must you be saved? And what are you supposed to be saved from?

In the beginning God created a perfect world in which people could live. All He required of them was to follow one simple command, but the first man and woman decided they knew better than God, and they disobeyed Him. Each of us has inherited the consequences of this disobedience: an imperfect world and an imperfect human nature which causes us to rebel (sin) against God.

Because you are made in God’s image, and “God is a Spirit”, you have a spirit that will survive when your physical body dies. But where will your spirit go? To heaven?

The Bible states in Matthew 5:48, “… your Father … in heaven is perfect”, and since God is perfect, He cannot allow your spirit to join Him in heaven because of your sinful nature. Even people we consider “good” are corrupt in God’s eyes: The Bible states in Romans 3:10, 23, “There is none righteous, no, not one … For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”.

Furthermore, there is a penalty for your sin—The Bible says in Romans 6:23, “the wages of sin is death”. “Death” means hell, which is a place of eternal separation from God. It is described as full of torment and fire.

So you need to be saved because your sin keeps you from heaven, and you can never do enough good on your own to be acceptable to God. Only one person is perfect and qualified to take your punishment for you, and that is Jesus Christ.

As it says in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, “… Christ died for our sins … was buried, and … rose again the third day”. Today He lives in heaven, ready to intercede with the Father on your behalf so that one day you may join Him. However, your salvation is not automatic.

WHAT MUST HAPPEN BEFORE YOU CAN BE SAVED?
First, you have to realize that you are a sinner who has not lived your life in a way that pleases God. A quick glance at the Ten Commandments will confirm that everyone has told a lie or taken the Lord’s name in vain or not honored their parents, etc., at some point in their lives. To us this may not seem so bad, but God’s standard is perfection, The Bible states in James 2:10, “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all”.

Next, turning away from those things that offend God, you must turn toward Jesus. You need to accept that Jesus’ death on the cross paid for your sins, ask God for forgiveness, and trust Him to save you.

If you do this sincerely, God will transform your rebellious nature: 2 Corinthians 5:17 states, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”. You will see life through God’s perspective and come to understand His plan for you.

This does not mean that you’ll immediately stop sinning or never sin. You’ll always fall short of God’s ideal throughout your life on earth and must continually ask for His forgiveness—1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”. However, as you go forward in your walk with Christ, learning about Him and growing closer to Him, the power of God’s Holy Spirit will help you to sin less.

THANKSGIVING
So when you give thanks this fall, it should be to the God who created you and provided a way for you to enjoy eternity with Him in heaven.

Amen.

The Only Way to Get to Heaven — Jesus Christ Alone (Gospel Light Minute X #462)

The Only way to Get to Heaven — Jesus Christ Alone (GLMX #462)

This is the “chief of sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, with the Gospel Light Minute X Podcast #462 titled, “The Only way to Get to Heaven — Jesus Christ Alone.” I’m here to remind you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me.

The earth didn’t get here by itself. The universe is not eternal. For example, stars, such as the sun, die out. You can’t get something from nothing. Nothing times or plus nothing equals nothing. So this means that there has to be a creator (God).

Why would God create mankind just to live a sin-filled life and then turn to dust in the ground? So if there is a God there must be a heaven. So how does a person get into heaven, or “get right with God”?

God created mankind for His glory, but doesn’t force us to love Him. He gave us a free will to choose to love Him or not. Sin is the lack of love for God, and separates us from a holy God. We are all sinners: even the nicest people still sin.

To be in God’s presence in heaven demands perfection. This is not possible because all human beings are stained with sin. This causes us all to be under God’s wrath since God demands perfection to be in His sight. We must live a perfect sinless life to avoid God’s wrath and satisfy God’s holiness. This is impossible for any human being to do. So then what good are our lives in God’s sight?

Among other things, our lives are a proving ground to see who has true saving faith and who does not. God tries people to test their faith to see whether they are true or not. The Bible says in Matthew 24:13, “But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved”. The Bible states in 2 Corinthians 5:10, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”

Even before we were born, God knew that we would be sinners who are not worthy to be in His presence. So He sent Jesus Christ down from heaven to live a life of perfect sinless obedience which we could never live, and to pay the penalty for our sin on the cross. So then there is a double imputation of Christ’s perfect life in our place and also as our substitute in His payment for our sins with His death on the cross. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:21, “For [God] hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”.

But even His death on the cross would not be sufficient to save us from God’s wrath because any man could die on a cross. No, to make the crucifixion effective, Jesus had to rise from the dead. If He had just stayed dead on the cross, we would still be in our sins: The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:17, “if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins”. Jesus Christ said in John 8:24, “I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins”. Jesus Christ also said in John 3:36, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”

Our part is to appropriate the perfect life, crucifixion, and resurrection of Christ by making Him our Lord and Savior. By accepting His perfect life and crucifixion as our substitute, culminated by His resurrection, we accept Him as our Savior. By our obedience we accept Him as our Lord. Please allow Jesus to control your life in all your ways and act as if Jesus is right there in your presence and make Him your Lord!

Jesus said in John 14:6: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”. Jesus said in John 10:9 “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved”.

So what must we do to be saved? We must turn to God in repentance (turning from our sins and false religion) and have faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

We are not saved by baptism nor is baptism necessary for salvation. We are cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ alone: The Bible states in 1 John 1:7, “…the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin”. The doctrine of baptismal regeneration is unbiblical. If, when meeting God, we are trusting in our baptism to save us, we will surely end up in hell. We cannot add to what Christ did for us. Trust in Christ alone for salvation from damnation to hell. Not Christ plus baptism—or anything else. The Bible states in Hebrews 10:19, “We have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus”.

Also, it is not possible that a truly saved person can ever lose their salvation. The following Scriptures make this abundantly clear: 1 Peter 1:4 calls Salvation “an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you”. The Bible says in Acts 13:48, “…as many as were ordained to eternal life believed”. This verse and the following show the doctrine of predestination. The Bible states in Romans 8:30, “Whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified”. This Romans passage is called the golden chain of salvation. It is all part of God’s plan and cannot be broken.

The Bible says in Ephesians 1:13-14, “…after that ye believed [in Jesus Christ], ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory”. So the Holy Spirit is a seal and a guarantee of our salvation until we get to heaven.

Finally, 1 John 5:13 says: “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life…”. Here God’s Word leaves no doubt about where believers stand. We may KNOW that we are eternally secure!

The Numbers of Hope (Gospel Light Minute X #461)

The Numbers of Hope (GLMX #461)

This is the “chief of sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, with the Gospel Light Minute X Podcast #461 titled, “The Numbers of Hope” I’m here to remind you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me.

A twenty-six-word parade of hope: beginning with God, ending with life, and urging us to do the same. Brief enough to write on a napkin or memorize in a moment, yet solid enough to weather two thousand years of storms and questions. If you know nothing of the Bible, start here. If you know everything in the Bible, return here. We all need the reminder. The heart of the human problem is the heart of the human. And God’s treatment is prescribed in John 3:16.

He loves.
He gave.
We believe.
We live.

He loves.
God loves you because he chooses to do so. The Bible says in Deut. 7:7-8, “The Lord did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:… because the Lord loved you…”. God’s love for you depends on His goodness, not yours. And since He is totally good, you are absolutely loved. You don’t need to win His love, you already have it. And since you can’t win it, you can’t lose it. He will love you forever. You may step outside of His will, but never His love. Mark it down. He loves you. So much, in fact, that…

He gave.
He gave His one and only Son. Jesus Christ is God’s “one and only.” He is unlike any other person in history. Every quality we attribute to God, we can give to Jesus. Jesus has an eternal life span, unending wisdom, and tireless energy. Most of all, Jesus is sinless. When He lived on the earth, He never sinned. The Bible says in 1 Peter 2:22, “[He] did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:”.

We, on the other hand, do wrong things daily. We stretch the truth. We hurt people. We take advantage of the weak and disrespect our family. What should God do? He has made his position clear. The Bible states in Hebrews 12:14 that “without [holiness] no man shall see the Lord”. Where does that leave us?

It leaves us depending on the 3:16 promise. “God… gave His only begotten Son…” Though sinless, Jesus took our sin. God placed our sin on His Son and punished it. When Jesus died on the cross, He died for us in our place. Our response to this great gift is simple…

We believe.
We trust Jesus to do what we can’t. We don’t trust our own efforts to save us. We can’t save ourselves. We don’t place our trust in other people to save us. We believe in Him.

We take similar steps of trust daily, even hourly. Believing the chair will support us, we set our weight on it. Believing water will hydrate, we drink it. Trusting the work of the light switch, we flip it. We have faith in the doorknob, so we turn it. We trust power we cannot see to do work we can’t accomplish. Jesus invites us to do the same with Him. And when we do, when we believe…

We live.
God gives us brand-new life. He gives us joy in this life and the promise of eternal life with Him. We have joy because we have His Spirit living within us. Little by little His Spirit changes us to be more like Jesus. No guilt in life, no fear of death, He gives life, now.

And life for eternity. In Heaven you will be you at your best. No anger or sadness, tears or trouble. Never weary, selfish, or defeated. Clear mind, tireless muscles, unhindered joy. And, most of all, God! Romans 11:33 says, “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!”. Heaven is a perfect place of perfected people with our perfect Lord.

He loves.
He gave.
We believe.
We live.

Would you like to accept the 3:16 promise? You can. Tell God you accept Him.

“Father, I believe you love me. You gave your one and only Son so I can live forever with you. Apart from you, I die. With you, I live. I choose life. I choose you.”

Amen.

Jesus awaits your prayer. Believe in Him and you will…

Not…

Perish…

You will have life, eternal life, forever.

A Time to Choose (Gospel Light Minute X #460)

A Time to Choose (GLMX #460)

This is the “chief of sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, with the Gospel Light Minute X Podcast #460 titled, “A Time to Choose” I’m here to remind you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me.

WHO DO YOU SERVE?
While America will soon decide who will serve as its president, let me ask you, dear , who do you serve? The Bible tells us that we serve one of two things: we either serve sin by disobeying God, or we serve righteousness by obeying Him. We may think that by “doing our own thing” we really don’t serve anyone or anything but ourselves, but that’s not true. There is no neutral ground. Jesus Christ said, “He that is not with Me is against Me” (Matthew 12:30).

You see, before being saved—before we turn to God in repentance and faith—all we can do is serve sin. Until then, there is nothing we can do to please God or serve Him because we are “dead in sins”. In the eyes of God, even “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags”.

A SERIOUS PROBLEM
Let’s not minimize the awfulness of sin. God hates sin! The Lord must, and will, punish all sin. No sin will be forgotten about or overlooked. The Bible says in Romans 6:23, “The wages of sin is death”. Hebrews 9:27 says, “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment”. The Bible states in Revelation 20:12, “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works”. There’s just no way around it. If we disobey God and serve sin, we will answer to God.

THE GOD-GIVEN SOLUTION
But, thank God, the Lord Jesus Christ suffered and died for us, bearing our sins, so that we might be saved. The Bible states in Galatians 3:13, “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree”. Yes, Jesus Christ hung on a tree (the cross), shed His precious blood in our place, and received the wrath of God upon Himself so that all who trust in Him may have the forgiveness of sins. Ephesians 1:7 says, “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace”.

MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE
John 6:28-29 says, “Then said they unto Him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent”. It is only through faith in the Lord Jesus that we can cease being slaves of sin and begin to serve God.

Let me ask you again: who do you serve? This is the most important choice you will ever make, and the time to choose is now: The Bible states in Joshua 24:15 “choose you this day whom ye will serve”. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 6:2, “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation”. The Bible is Acts 16:31, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved”.

Amen.

Many were found to be in excellent health. However, at a later date, I was often called to the hospital emergency room to examine one of my patients with an acute emergency—a possible heart attack, an accident, or some other serious physical problem. Such patients were often fearful and apprehensive, with the thought of death uppermost in their minds.

After dealing with their medical emergency, I often heard them admit to being exposed to Christianity by radio or TV, but seldom read the Bible, prayed, or attended church. They were living good moral lives, performing good deeds, and giving to charities, but did not sense the peace of God.

Frequently I asked the question, “If you were to die unexpectedly, do you know for certain that you would enter heaven?” The typical answer was, “I think so,” or “I hope so.” However, some patients would answer, “Yes, I know so. I have trusted the Lord Jesus Christ and have peace with God. I am prepared for heaven.”

Do you ever wonder how you can know for certain that you have eternal life, peace with God, and be prepared to enter heaven?

All physicians have medical textbooks written by authorities to assist them in making a correct diagnosis and proper treatment. Humanity also has a guidebook, provided by the supreme spiritual authority—God. The Bible shows us how to know God, how to live a meaningful life that pleases him, and how to spend eternity in heaven.

The Bible also declares in Romans 3:23; 6:23 that we all have a fatal spiritual condition—“all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God….the wages of sin is death”. Like a critically ill patient must seek medical care to avoid death, we must find a solution to our sinful condition or we will die in our sins without God.

Thankfully, God has provided a cure. He did this by sending his Son, Jesus Christ, to die on a cross to cleanse us from all our sins. The Bible says in Romans 5:8, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”. The sinless Son of God took judgment, so God can justly forgive your sins and give you eternal life. Three days after His crucifixion, Christ came back to life, proving that He had fully paid the penalty for all our sins.

The Next Step

In order to belong to God’s family, you must, by faith, trust in Jesus Christ as your Savior. The Bible describes this step of faith like this: Romans 10:9-10 states, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation”.

The Bible states in Romans 10:13, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved”. If you will call on Jesus Christ in faith as your Savior from the judgment you deserve, you will be saved. No one is excluded. That means you can know now that you are prepared to meet God in heaven. There’s no “Maybe” or “I hope so” or “I think so.” Only “I Know So!”

What is keeping you from putting your trust in Jesus Christ today? The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 6:2, “Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation”.

If you want to be saved from the wrath to come and from an eternity in Hell, and if you believe that Jesus Christ suffered, bled, and died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose again from the dead and you are willing to trust Jesus Christ with all of your heart so you can go to Heaven, please pray with me what is called the sinner’s prayer: Holy Father God, I acknowledge that I am a sinner and I admit that I have sinned against You and that I have broken Your Ten Commandments. Amen.

If those words express your faith in Jesus Christ, three positive changes will result:

  1. You can say, “I know I have eternal life based on the authority of God’s Word.”

The Bible says in 1 John 5:13, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God”.

  1. You have peace with God.

The Bible states in Romans 5:1, “Therefore being justified [made right with God]  by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ”.

  1. You have passed from spiritual death into eternal life…that begins now!

Jesus Christ said in John 5:24, “He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life”.

America Needs Someone Else Besides Trump and Biden (Gospel Light Minute X #457)

America Needs Someone Else Besides Trump and Biden (GLMX #457)

This is the “chief of sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, with the Gospel Light Minute X Podcast #457 titled, “Who America Needs” I’m here to remind you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me.

Which issues matter most to you? According to a keyword analysis of the candidates’ websites, some of the issues listed reflect the hot topics in this year’s election: covid-19, civil rights, climate change, military families, foreign policy, student debt, refugees, gun violence, unemployment, immigration, economy, and supreme court. If you’ve been paying attention to the debates, ads, and campaign speeches, you can probably identify which candidates are responsible for pushing many of these topics forward.

Regardless of who wins this election, these issues will continue to be at the forefront of our national discussion for years to come. Why is that? Why do some conflicts and problems never seem to go away? Part of the reason is the gridlock which seems to define our government. Neither side wants to lose, so the divide between left and right becomes more entrenched with each passing year.

On another level, though, we see that the issues facing America have their roots in human nature. We want what someone else has. We don’t want to share what’s ours to meet the needs of others. We argue and fight to protect what we think we deserve. We are envious. We are greedy. We are selfish. We hate.

Where do these problems originate? What can be done to fix them? While each candidate has a plan to deal with the symptoms of our society’s ills, none of them can fix the root cause. Jesus Christ said in Mark 7:21-22, “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness”.

The main problem we have in America is the same issue which has plagued mankind since the beginning of history—the problem of sin in the human heart. Despite our best efforts, we will not find the remedy to this problem in any policy or president. There is only one person who has the answer for sin. He is not a Republican, nor is He a Democrat. He is Jesus, the Son of God.

Jesus came to earth to solve the problem of sin. Before He was born, His mission was announced by an angel. Matthew 1:21 says, “He shall save His people from their sins”. When He began His ministry of teaching, healing, and performing miracles, He was introduced as “the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world”.

Our sin must be put away before we can walk with God and spend eternity with Him in Heaven. When Jesus died on Calvary’s cross, He “suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God”. He was then raised from the dead so we can be forgiven and set free.

Jesus said in Mark 1:15, “Repent ye, and believe the gospel”. To receive the blessing of salvation from sin, we must turn to God in repentance—we must shift our position from unbelief, sin, and self-righteousness—and put our trust in Jesus. The Bible says in Acts 16:31, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved”.

When you stand before God some day, He probably won’t ask who you voted for in the 2020 election. The only question which will really matter then is the one I ask you now: “What will you do with Jesus?”

The Captain of Pride (Gospel Light Minute X #456)

The Captain of Pride (GLMX #456)

This is the “chief of sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, with the Gospel Light Minute X Podcast #456 titled, “The Captain of Pride” I’m here to remind you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me.

“The storm came quickly, racing with a white veil of water across a suddenly angry sea and tumbling the Pride of Baltimore onto its side. The ship’s demise was nearly as swift, taking barely a minute, and ending with a silent plunge of about a mile to the ocean floor” (Baltimore Evening Sun, May 20, 1986). The Pride was a “tall ship,” a replica of a Baltimore Clipper ship built in conjunction with the celebration of America’s Bicentennial.

Eight crew members of the Pride were saved after floating in a life raft for four and a half days. Four others were drowned or missing; among these was the Pride’s captain, Armin Elsaesser. The Evening Sun reports that Captain Elsaesser “had ordered his crew on deck perhaps saving some of their lives. He had dived below the water [to free] the [life] rafts. And, when last seen … he had been swimming back toward his ship.”

The bravery and self-sacrifice of Captain Elsaesser brings to mind our “Captain of Salvation,” the Lord Jesus Christ. And the predicament of the crew of the capsized Pride, floundering and about to perish in a stormy sea, may remind us of our own situation. Life is often a sea of:

Confusion—What is right? What is truth?

Anxiety—When will the economy crumble? Where will terrorists or crazed gunmen strike next? Can a nuclear disaster occur in our country?

Alienation—Fired from job, divorced from spouse, rejected by children.

Unhappiness—Alcohol, drugs, money, extramarital affairs, and entertainment don’t seem to help.

Sin—Failure to obey God’s law and to do His will.

The Bible describes us as “dead in trespasses and sins … fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind … tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine” (Ephesians 2:1,3; 4:14). We are perishing! Because of our sins and alienation from God, all we have to look forward to is an eternity in “the lake of fire”, in “outer darkness” where “there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth”.

That is the dark side of God’s message for mankind, stated so clearly in the Scriptures.

But, praise God, there is a bright side as well! The Bible says in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”. Jesus Christ is God’s only Son, and if we believe in Him we will have everlasting life. Jesus went into “deep waters, where the floods overflowed [Him]”. We deserve to be punished for our sins and our rebellion against God. Yet, in God’s gracious plan, He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to die as our substitute and pay the penalty for our sins. The Bible describes it this way in Isaiah 53:5: “He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed”.

It would have been the height of folly for the crew of the Pride, swimming about in the stormy waters of the Atlantic, to spurn the safety of the lifeboat, to say, “I’m going to try to swim to safety.” And yet that is the way that millions of otherwise intelligent people are responding to the gospel of God’s free gift of salvation today. Many are headed for an eternity of blackness primarily because of human pride. “I can take care of myself. I’ll make my own way to heaven.” Or, “I’m basically a good person. I’ve never harmed anyone. If there is a God and if there is life after death, I will fare okay.” But listen to God’s Word in John 14:6: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”.

The eight survivors of the Pride tragedy owe their lives to Captain Elsaesser and to the mercy of God. They committed themselves to the safety of the life raft secured for them. Do not perish because of your sins, but commit yourself to the safety of the eternal life “raft” that God has prepared for you. Jesus says in John 5:24: “He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life”.

Receive Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord today, and join the millions of other believers who have passed out of death into life, and out of confusion, anxiety, alienation, unhappiness, and sin into peace, security, fulfillment, satisfaction, and righteousness, both in this life and for all eternity.

I believe that He suffered, bled, and died on the cross for my sins, was buried and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life. How Not to Fear in These Times of Turmoil (Gospel Light Minute X #455)

Fear Not (GLMX #455)

This is the “chief of sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, with the Gospel Light Minute X Podcast #455 titled, “Fear Not” I’m here to remind you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me.

A CAUSE FOR FEAR?
Things that we have always considered to be safe activities—going to school or work, traveling, going out with friends, or going shopping—now require a second thought. It seems that each day’s news brings more information about potential risks to our safety.

Throughout our lives, it is calming and reassuring to know that someone is looking out for our safety. Loved ones tell children, “Don’t be afraid,” and do their best to protect them from harm. Governments and other agencies are also working to eliminate some of the sources of our fears through increased security measures and public health programs.

DELAYING THE INEVITABLE?
But these efforts, even if perfectly successful, can only serve to dull or delay our fears—especially our fear of death. That’s because easing the fear of dying today does not deal with the fear of dying tomorrow, or next week, or next year. Even if it were possible to assure a person’s long-term safety, our underlying fear of death would still be there, because we cannot change the fact that death is appointed to us all.

Sadly, many people will spend their entire lives dealing with various fears—and possibly even overcoming some of them—only to find that they hadn’t dealt with what should have been their greatest concern. Jesus said in Matthew 10:28, “Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell”. Jesus knew that we often fear death, but He also knew that there is something far worse than death. Because we “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”, our never-dying souls are in danger of facing God’s eternal judgment. If anything causes us to fear, that should!

REMOVING THE BIGGEST FEAR
But in the Bible we also read how Jesus, the Son of God, came to earth as a man and died on Calvary’s cross, “that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage” (Hebrews 2:14–15).

Jesus has provided the way of victory over sin and death! He summed it up well when He said in John 11:25, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live”. Even when our life on earth is over, those who trust Jesus Christ as their Savior will not face eternal separation from God, but rather will live with Him, sharing His blessings, for eternity!

HELP FOR EACH NEED
Regardless of what is going on in the world around us, the Bible reminds God’s children in 2 Timothy 1:7 that: “God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”. When we face life’s troubles, Jesus will tell us the same thing He told His disciples in Matthew 14:27 when they were in a boat in the middle of a storm-tossed sea: “Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid”. Because God is able to work all things together for the good of His children, the Bible tells us 365 times to “fear not.” That’s a reminder for every day of the year!

ARE YOU READY TO LET GO OF YOUR FEARS?
First, you need to enter into a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. To do this, you must recognize that your sin separates you from God, and turn to Him for salvation. When you put your trust in Jesus, He forgives all of your sins and promises you an eternal home with Him in Heaven. The Bible says in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life”.

Next, make it a priority to read the Bible every day so you can learn more about how God cares for His children. Someone has said, “Feed your faith and your fears will starve to death.” Take your cares and anxieties to God, and He has promised to give you His perfect peace in return.

Amen.
