TEXT: Matthew 7:13-23

13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Arthur W. Pink said, “False prophets are to be found in the circles of the most orthodox, and they pretend to have a fervent love for souls, yet they fatally delude multitudes concerning the way of salvation. The pulpit, platform, and pamphlet hucksters have wantonly lowered the standard of divine holiness and so adulterated the Gospel in order to make it palatable to the carnal mind.”

Immediately upon warning us against taking the broad road which leads to destruction and urging us to “enter in at the strait gate,” Jesus issues a warning against false prophets “who come in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves.” One reason why is because false prophets litter the broad road to destruction but they also stand at the straight gate trying to divert seekers to the more palatable wide gatewhere All along the broad way you will hear fake preachers saying things like this:

“Heaven and Hell are myths.”

“Heaven and Hell are what we make them here on earth.”

“God is so loving that He won’t permit anyone to be punished for eternity.”

“Satan isn’t real.”

“Everyone goes to Heaven in the end.”

“Sin is just a sickness. You can conquer it through meditation or make up for it through doing good works.”

This is not to mention the false prophets who may appear doctrinally sound, but behind the scenes, they are preying on the sheep spiritually, financially, and sexually.

Jesus says, “Beware of these false prophets.” They may look kind, concerned, and compassionate on the outside. But they are Satan’s secret agents, keeping people deceived as they march straight to Hell. Dr. Warren Wiersbe said, “False prophets who teach false doctrine can produce only a false righteousness. Their fruit (the results of their ministry) is false and cannot last. The prophets themselves are false; the closer we get to them, the more we see the falsity of their lives and doctrines. They magnify themselves, not Jesus Christ; and their purpose is to exploit people, not to edify them. The person who believes false doctrine, or who follows a false prophet, will never experience a changed life. Unfortunately, some people do not realize this until it is too late.”

How do we avoid being entrapped by wolves in sheep’s clothing? Jesus says, “Ye shall know them by their fruits.” Look at the lifestyle of someone who claims to be a prophet, preacher, or teacher. How closely do they identify with Jesus, not just in their words, but in the way they live. Do they embody the characteristics of humility, honesty, and holy living. Do they care more about lifting up Christ or lifting up themselves? I am not saying that they will be perfect. No preacher is. But when a preacher sins, does he confess, repent, and submit himself to the teaching of Scripture? Or does he justify himself, lie, hide, and try to twist Scripture to defend his behavior?

With a proliferation of voices claiming to be pastors, ministers, preachers, teachers, evangelists, bishops and even prophets, it is more important than ever that we examine the life of one who claims to fill this role before accepting or following their teaching.

James Gustafson wrote:

Since savage wolves, consumed with greed,
Seek simple sheep on which to feed,
Wise are those lambs who closely graze
Under their Shepherd’s watchful gaze.

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
