In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Peter Quill Finally Found his Father, and it’s Important That You Do Too (Gospel Light Minute X #279)

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 is in theaters now, and one of the greatest mysteries of the popular addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — Who is Peter Quill’s father? — has been answered. The first film saw the boy Peter being taken from Earth by alien bounty hunters after his mother, who was dying of cancer, tells him that his father is an angelic, light-filled being. By the end of the film, Peter, who is now a grown man played by Chris Pratt, learns that his father is someone ancient, unknown, and unseen. In Volume 2, Peter finally meets his father, Ego, played by Kurt Russell. Ego is an immortal “living planet”, immensely powerful, who has also been traversing the galaxies searching for his son. Peter learns about his own true nature from his god-like father and realizes that he is far more important than he ever imagined.

Just as Peter does not understand himself or begin to reach his full potential until he meets his father, we will not understand ourselves or begin to reach the highest levels of satisfaction, joy, and contentment until we meet our Divine Father, the Creator God. Augustine prayed, “You have made us for yourself, O God, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you.”

Preaching to the Greeks in Acts 17, Paul said, “God made the world and all things therein. He hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.”

In order to live in full confidence of who you are and where you belong in life, you need to get to know God as your Father. He created you, and He longs for a relationship with you. He wants to be your Father not just in name, but in reality. He loves you already, but He wants to direct you, teach you, guide you, and most importantly, take you to Heaven to be with Him forever. And He has already put everything in place for you to join Him. The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ paved the way for you to meet your Father, for Him to meet you, and for you both to enjoy eternity together. Allow me to explain how you can begin a relationship with God today.

First, you must realize and admit that you are a sinner and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20: “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Romans 3:23 reads: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” In fact, I am the chief of sinners, so don’t think that you’re alone.

Second, you must understand that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…” This is both spiritual death and physical death. We die physically and go to the grave because of sin and we die spiritually and go to hell because of sin.

Third, you must understand that you are on the road to hell because of your sins. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” The Bible says in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Fourth, you must accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Fifth, you must accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. Because of God’s love for you, he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the penalty for your sin. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Because God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins, we can live with God in Heaven for all eternity after we die.

Finally, with these facts in mind, you must repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me the following simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is trusting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!

Believe by faith. Share the faith. And keep the faith! God Bless You!

NFL Cornerback Scott Starks: “I Got Down on My Knees and Asked God to Be the Lord of My Life” (Gospel Light Minute #224)

Daniel Whyte III

He is a former NFL cornerback for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played college football at the University of Wisconsin–Madison where he was also a track star. He played for the Jaguars from 2005 to 2010 and recorded 71 tackles. He is currently director of marketing at Kinetic Home Health in Jacksonville.

When he was playing in the NFL, he wrote a piece for Beyond the Ultimate describing how he came to faith in Christ:

“I’m 5’9 and probably 178 lbs on a good day. There’s no way I should be playing in the NFL. But here I am. And it is God’s love that puts everything into perspective for me. No matter what trials may come, if you can get back to the fact that God loves you, it puts everything into perspective.

“I went through a time where I built up a lot of pride because of the success I had on the field, in school and with girls. You know, sin feels good for a reason. It feels good when you’re doing it. But then I just felt empty inside. When I got to college it just got worse. And I knew exactly why that was. I got down on my knees and asked God for forgiveness and to be the Lord of my life.

“But it’s not like I had everything together in my life. I made the mistake of expecting God to give me everything I wanted. Then I had a real mediocre season. I was about to quit football and leave it all together. But I learned something really important — not to seek God for what he could do for me, but to just get to know Him better. It made so much sense.

“When you’re in a relationship with God, you look for His heart, not a hand-out. He wants a relationship with you. And once you get into learning more about Him, you learn more about yourself. That’s what the Bible is about, instructions for our life and how we should seek Him. It’s a relief.”

His name is Scott Starks.

This is the “Chief of Sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, reminding you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me. Just as Scott Starks gave his life to Christ, may I encourage you to do the same. Here is how:

1. Accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law.

2. Accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

3. Accept the fact that you are on the road to hell.

4. Accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

5. Accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

6. With these facts in mind, please repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Dear friend, if you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me this simple prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
