Pray for the Peace of America: Also a Response to President Trump’s Speech On the National Day of Prayer and his Signing of an Executive Order Ensuring Religious Freedom and Freedom of Speech for Christians and All People in America

TEXT: Jeremiah 29:7:

Seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

In 1775, when America was in its birth throes, the Continental Congress called for a national day of “public humiliation, fasting, and prayer.” In 1863, when our nation was in the midst of a conflict that threatened to leave it irreconcilably shattered, President Abraham Lincoln called the nation to a national day of prayer. In 1952, having recognized the significance of prayer throughout our nation’s history, Congress established the National Day of Prayer as an annual event; the bill was signed into law by President Harry Truman. Since then, every president has signed a National Day of Prayer proclamation.

This year, I want to say thank you to President Trump for not only signing the proclamation, but holding a public event at the White House to mark the National Day of Prayer. It is great when our government leaders not only acknowledge God in private, but set an example before the whole nation by doing so in public. As God declared in Proverbs 8:15-16, “By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.”

On behalf of Christians in America and around the world, I would also like to thank President Trump for signing an executive order promoting religious freedom and free speech. Before the signing, Trump said, “We will not allow people of faith to be targeted, bullied, or silenced anymore. No one should be censoring sermons or targeting pastors.” This is good news for Christians in America who have been sued, fined, and even jailed for speaking up for and abiding by Biblical beliefs.

However, we must not let the actions of today cause us to let our guard down. Our real enemies are not people of other political parties or worldviews who wish to silence believers. America, as great as she is, is not Heaven where God’s law is the only law. Our real enemy is the devil, and as long as we continue to preach biblical truth, America (and every country) will always be a hostile land. As such, we must do as God told the children of Israel to do when they were taken to Babylon. Jeremiah said, “Seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.”

We ought to pray for the peace of America — not just her peace in relation to outside threats, but her peace in relation to her greatest threats — the ones that come from her own people. If America perishes, it will be not because of foreign assault, but because we, as a people, did not humble ourselves before God, confess our sins, and commit to obeying Him and loving one another. We ought to pray that all people will abide by the principles of tolerance and free speech, and we ought to abide by such principles ourselves. We ought to shine a light in this country through the sharing of the Gospel and through Christ-like behavior. If we pray for our country and work for her peace by inviting people to get to know the Prince of Peace, America can once again become a shining city on a hill.

Now, if you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, your first prayer needs to be what we call the Sinner’s Prayer. First, please understand that you are a sinner, just as I am, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on trusting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. You have done the most important thing in life. For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door, by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.
