The Free State of Glory and the Prison State of Despair (Part 9)
Although we are in the middle of a series and a passage about Heaven, God wants to remind us that everyone is not going to Heaven in the end. Obviously, the Biblical writings about Heaven are not meant for us to feel good. Rather, they are descriptions of reality. If God were just trying to make us feel good, He could have left out the parts about Hell. The fact that He didn’t ought to strengthen our confidence in the Word of God and in the reality of Heaven. The Bible does not teach pie-in-the-sky for eternity. Rather, it presents two stark and opposing realities that we must grapple with and face.
Of those who will not be making it into Heaven, we have discussed those described as “fearful,” “unbelieving,” “abominable,” “murderers,” “whoremongers,” and “sorcerers.”
The next group of people described as going to the lake of fire are described as idolaters. An idolater is someone who worships an idol. In ancient times, and even in some places today, people worshiped images carved out of stone, wood, or metal. They prayed to and made offerings to these idols. They even blamed the idols when things did not go well, believing that they had done something to offend the false the idol was supposed to represent.
Such actions seem absurd to most people today, but people are still making and worshipping idols in the twenty-first century. Only now our idols are our bank accounts, our possessions, other people, or our own selves. Idolatry is the sin of putting anyone or anything before God. Whoever or whatever is number one in your life, if it’s not God, it’s an idol. And no idolaters will make it into Heaven.
Tim Keller said, “When anything in life is an absolute requirement for your happiness and self-worth, it is essentially an idol, something you are actually worshiping.” Paul praised the Thessalonian believers for turning “from idols to serve the true and living God; And to wait for his Son from heaven, even Jesus who delivered us from the wrath to come.” God takes great offense at idolatry. The main reason He punished His chosen people by having their country invaded and the people taken captive to foreign lands is because they had become idolatrous, worshipping the false gods of the nations around them. Because they did not serve the true and living God, they were not delivered from His wrath. We don’t hear this much today but God makes it clear that he is a jealous God. Exodus 34:14 states, “For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God”. Exodus 20:3-5 states, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.”
And if you are not serving the true and living God with all your heart, mind, and soul, you will also not be delivered from the wrath to come — eternal punishment in the lake of fire.
If you are willing to lay aside your idolatry and serve the true and living God by believing on His Son Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to share with you how you can do that right now.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew All 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
