Over the course of the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump and the black community were by-and-large not the best of friends. Trump attempted to reach out to “the blacks,” but repeatedly stumbled when trying to speak to them directly. Many blacks had no interest in reaching out to him. Some in the black community, the majority of which supported Hillary Clinton, have been tempted to hold a grudge over the election outcome. However, this is not wise. Over the next few days, I want to share with you a few ways the new president can be a help to the black community and a few ways the black community can be a help to Mr. Trump during his time in office based upon the word of God.

1. Donald Trump Can Help Black America by Setting a Godly Example

Proverbs 29:2 says, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.”

The leader of a nation is not only the representative of that nation’s people to other nations, but he is a representative of that nation to God. If the ruler is evil, that is reflected on the whole nation. If the ruler is good, that is reflected on the whole nation. God will reward a leader who is obedient to Him by blessing the nation with peace and prosperity; God will punish a leader who is disobedient to Him by taking away peace and prosperity.

Matthew Henry said, “People will have cause to rejoice or mourn according as their rulers are righteous or wicked; for, if the righteous be in authority, sin will be punished and restrained, religion and virtue will be supported and kept in reputation; but, if the wicked get power in their hands, wickedness will abound, religion and religious people will be persecuted, and so the ends of government will be perverted. The people will actually rejoice or mourn according as their rulers are righteous or wicked. Such a conviction are even the common people under of the excellency of virtue and religion that they will rejoice when they see them preferred and countenanced; and, on the contrary, let men have ever so much honour or power, if they be wicked and vicious, and use it ill, they make themselves contemptible and base before all the people and subjects will think themselves miserable under such a government.”

Donald Trump’s past indiscretions were well discussed during the campaign season. He is a sinner like the rest of us. Quite frankly, it was refreshing to see a candidate own up to his sinfulness and keep on rolling. But, now, he is called to a higher standard of leadership that demands he is beyond reproach. The whole nation and the whole world is looking at him; he should aim to set a godly example before all, particularly now as he claims to be a Christian. We know that he will not be perfect and we know that according to Dr. James Dobson, is a baby Christian, and because of that he is not going to become a Billy Graham overnight. But at his age, he can make up his mind to live a certain way for the good of the country and the good of the world. Now that he is the president of the United States and the undisputed leader of the free world, he cannot engage in what he called “locker room talk” or locker room activity from this point on to the day he dies. If, by God’s grace and with God’s help and with the help of Christian brothers who surround him, he sets a godly example, he will give no one in the nation the ability to point the finger and use him as an excuse for their bad behavior.

Now, here is something black America can do to help Donald Trump:

1. Black Americans Can Help President Trump by Praying For Him

1 Timothy 2:1-2 says, “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”

The Bible clearly commands that we should pray for our governmental leaders—all of them, whether we agree with them or not. There are two reasons why we ought to pray for President Trump.

First, because he needs God’s guidance. President Obama needed it. President Bush needed it. President Clinton needed it. A wise leader will seek God’s guidance as Solomon did. The least we can do is pray that God would lead him, guide him, direct him, and give him wisdom to make the right decisions.

The second reason why we ought to pray for President Trump is because prayer reminds us of who is really in control. Ultimately, our trust does not reside in President Trump or any other president, but in God. Whatever concerns you have about the new administration, you can take them before the Lord in prayer and leave it there.

David Guzik said, “Early Christians were often accused of undermining the state because they claimed a higher Lord other than Caesar. Yet they would point out that they supported the state by being good citizens and by praying for the emperor, not to him. In the previous verse Paul said that we should give thanks for all men, and here he connects the thought with those who are in authority over us. We should give thanks for those who are in authority, because God has ordained government in society to keep order. The early church leader Tertullian explained: “We pray for all the emperors, that God may grant them long life, a secure government, a prosperous family, vigorous troops, a faithful senate, an obedient people; that the whole world may be in peace; and that God may grant, both to Caesar and to every man, the accomplishment of their just desires.””

In closing, many people have the view that the only way America’s problems can be solved is through the government. These people place their hope and trust in the government for solutions to the difficulties that our country faces and that they themselves personally face. However, there is Someone else who we should look to for the solutions to all of our problems.

His name is Jesus Christ. He is God’s Son who came to this earth two thousand years ago. He came to die on the cross for our sins, so that we would not have to suffer eternal punishment in Hell.

Billy Graham once said, “I do not believe that any man can solve the problems of life without Jesus Christ.” No matter what problems you are facing, you can only find the solution for your problems in Jesus Christ. If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, please allow me to show you how you can accept Him as your Savior today:

1. Accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7: 20: “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

2. Accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

3. Accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

4. Accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

5. Accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (Jesus Christ, John 3:16).

With these facts in mind, please repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you are willing to trust Christ as your Saviour, please pray the following prayer:

Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
