TEXT: John 17:12-16:
12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
———-
Today, I am continuing the daily Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign sermon series, which is aimed at sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with unbelievers and reminding Christians, in this important election year, to keep the main thing the main thing — and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents, politicians, and people, but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey the Lord’s Great Commission which is to, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” and who have refused to obey God’s repeated commands to “pray without ceasing” for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders. Yes, you should pray for the right candidate to win; yes, you should vote for the candidate that the Lord gives you peace about voting for. But, don’t get caught up in it like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord.
This campaign is inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says, “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” Acts 5:42 which says, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.” And 2 Timothy 2:4 which says, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”
This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of those saints who still loves to hear the “Old, old story of Jesus and His love” — As another hymn says, “For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.” This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and understand the Gospel and be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell. This is message number 288.
J.C. Ryle said, “Tell the young, tell the poor, tell the aged, tell the ignorant, tell the sick, tell the dying — tell them all about Christ. Tell them of His power, and tell them of His love; tell them of His doings, and tell them of His feelings; tell them what He has done for the chief of sinners; tell them what He is willing to do until the last day of time; tell it to them over and over again. Never be tired of speaking of Christ. Say to them broadly and fully, freely and unconditionally, unreservedly and undoubtingly, ‘Come unto Christ, as the penitent thief did; come unto Christ, and you shall be saved.'”
In this prayer, Jesus expresses three reasons why He wants His disciples to remain in the world. In the last two sermons I have given you two reasons:
The first reason why is so that they could be a light to the world. Although Jesus had come to be the light of the world, there were many who rejected that light and continued to live in darkness. The disciples would carry on as the bearers of Jesus’ light.
Some 33 years ago, God led me to name our ministry Gospel Light Ministries International, which now has many variations under that name such as Gospel Light Society, Gospel Light House of Prayer, etc.The name comes from Acts 26:18 which says, “To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.” Our theme song is the old hymn Send the Light the blessed Gospel light, by Charles H. Gabriel which goes like this:
There’s a call comes ringing o’er the restless wave,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
There are souls to rescue, there are souls to save,
Send the light! Send the light!
We have heard the Macedonian call today,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
And a golden off’ring at the cross we lay,
Send the light! Send the light!
Let us pray that grace may everywhere abound,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
And a Christlike spirit everywhere be found,
Send the light! Send the light!
Let us not grow weary in the work of love,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
Let us gather jewels for a crown above,
Send the light! Send the light!
Refrain: Send the light, the blessed Gospel light;
Let it shine from shore to shore!
Send the light, the blessed Gospel light;
Let it shine forevermore!
The second reason why the disciples would remain in the world is so that they could witness to people about Jesus. Jesus gave them the Great Commission to fulfill — to take the Gospel to the ends of the Earth. The disciples began that endeavour and every successive generation of believers has as well. The Gospel being taken to the ends of the earth — not only in preaching and teaching, but in living — is still the mandate of the church today.
The third reason why Jesus wants us to remain in the world is so that we will experience the full glory of God. If we, immediately upon salvation, are snatched away to Heaven, we will miss out on seeing God fully glorified on Earth. There are aspects of God’s nature and aspects of the work of salvation that can be better appreciated only by remaining in the world. Only by seeing the effects of sin can we fully appreciate that Jesus overcame sin. Only by experiencing the death of loved ones can we fully appreciate Jesus defied death. Only by seeing the devastating effects of Satan’s sway over the world can we fully appreciate Jesus as the one who conquered Satan.
We typically think that we will only know God and Jesus fully and freely once we are whisked away to Heaven, but God’s glory shines even on the Earth. By knowing Him better here, we will know Him better there.
Jesus did not want the disciples to despair because they had to remain in the world, and He does not want us to despair either. Jesus prayed for us, that God would keep us and preserve us during our time on this Earth. He is still making this prayer request for us in Heaven right now. And God has and will continue to answer the prayer of His dear Son.
Stephen Horsfall spoke of the mission of the Christians who remain in the world in his song:
Sing a new song of glory and salvation,
through all the earth let voices now be raised;
speak of God’s mighty power in every nation
great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised!
Sing and adore, shout aloud with jubilation,
tell of the truth and splendour of that Name;
come with thanksgiving, worship, all creation
praise be to God, for evermore the same.
If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Saviour, here is how you can place your faith and trust in Him today.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
