How to Overcome Temptation, Part 6 (Onward Christian Soldiers #129)

Onward Christian Soldiers

Our key Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 10:13: “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

Our lesson today is titled “How to Overcome Temptation, Part 6”

We have already looked at two steps to overcome temptation, which are:

1. Count on your death with Christ.
2. Count on Christ’s life in you.

The third step you must take is to arm yourself with the Word of God. In our last lesson, we saw how Jesus used the word of God to defeat the devil, and we talked about the importance of hiding the word of God in our hearts to use for that purpose. We also began looking at some “victory verses” to learn in order to use against Satan. We are going to continue looking at those “victory verses”:

Let’s look at these victory verses:

1. 1 John 4:4: “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” Jesus Christ is the One who is in you. Satan is the one who is “in the world.” This verse says that Jesus Christ who is in you is greater than Satan who is in the world. The Bible Knowledge Commentary states, “Reliance on God is the secret of all victory whether over heresy or any other snare. The indwelling One—the Holy Spirit who indwells every believer and is thus ‘the One who is in you’ — is mightier than the one who is in the world, namely, Satan.”

2 Timothy 1:7: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” The spirit of fear is from Satan. Don’t accept it! God does not give us the spirit of fear; instead, He gives us the spirit of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. The Bible Knowledge Commentary states, “Timidity has no place in God’s service. Instead God gives a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline. These three virtues, each supplied by the Holy Spirit, should characterize the believer.”

Philippians 1:6: “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” If you are God’s child, God has begun a good work in you. He will continue that work until the day you go to meet Him. You can count on this. The Bible Knowledge Commentary states, “Paul had no doubt that God would continue in the Philippians what He had begun to do in them. God would work in them until the day of Christ Jesus. Though Paul did not know when that day would occur—when all believers would be caught up to meet the Lord in the air—he did know that God would continue the work He had begun in His own children.”

If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we are going to continue looking at how we can use the Word of God to overcome temptation next week.

If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Saviour, John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

The Bible also says in Romans 10:9 and 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved…. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and I want to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! I want to congratulate you on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

Until next time, May the Lord Bless You!
