How to Overcome Temptation, Part 5 (Onward Christian Soldiers #128)

Our key Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 10:13: “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

Our lesson today is titled “How to Overcome Temptation, Part 5”

We are going to continue looking at the four steps to overcoming temptation. We have already covered the first two, which are:

1. Count on your death with Christ.
2. Count on Christ’s life in you.

The third step you must take is to arm yourself with the Word of God.

We have already learned about the mighty weapon of prayer which God has given us. But God has given us another weapon to use against Satan. This weapon is the Word of God. Ephesians 6:17 says, “Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”

When the Lord Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He used this weapon to defeat Satan. Three times Satan tempted the Lord Jesus, and three times Jesus answered him with the Word of God.

The Lord Jesus used exactly the right verse to meet each temptation of Satan. When Satan tried to get Jesus to worship him by offering Him all the kingdoms of this world, Jesus did not quote the 23rd Psalm. That is a beautiful passage of Scripture, but it was not the weapon to use against that temptation. Instead Jesus said, “Get thee behind me, Satan! For it is written, ‘Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve.'”

The Lord Jesus defeated Satan because He knew how to use the Word of God. This is why it is important for you to hide the Word of God in your heart. You must arm yourself with the Word of God.

Here are some victory verses for you to learn. Hide them in your heart and prepare to use them against Satan.

1. John 8:32: “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” God’s Word is the truth. When you know the truth about sin, Satan, and temptation, you can be set free from their power over you.

2. Romans 6:14: “For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.” Sin shall not continue to rule over you. Why? Because you are “under grace,” where God’s mighty power works in your behalf. Christ lives in you and He will enable you to overcome sin’s power.

3. James 4:7: “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Learn to resist Satan. Resist him with the Word of God. Resist Him in Jesus’ name. Resist him in the victory of Calvary. Remind him that he is defeated and he will flee from you.

If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we are going to continue looking at how we can overcome temptation next week.

If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Saviour, John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

The Bible also says in Romans 10:9 and 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved…. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and I want to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! I want to congratulate you on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

Until next time, May the Lord Bless You!
