How to Overcome Temptation, Part 3 (Onward Christian Soldiers #126)

Onward Christian Soldiers

Our key Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 10:13: “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

Our lesson today is titled “How to Overcome Temptation, Part 3”

In our last lesson, we began looking at the first thing we must do in order to overcome temptation. We must count on our death in Christ. Because we are dead in Christ, we are dead to sin, Satan, the world, and the flesh. None of these have a hold on us like they did before, and we do not have to obey any of these influences ever again.

The second thing we must do in order to overcome temptation is to Count on Christ’s Life in Us.

Temptation comes to us, not only from Satan, but also from within us. James 1:14 says, “Every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.” We have within us something which is always trying to pull us down into sin. The Bible calls it “the law of sin which is in our members [our body].”

What is a “law”? According to Merriam-Webster, in science, a “law” is “a generalized statement of natural processes; specifically one of the chief generalizations of science variously conceived as imposed upon nature by the Creator.” In other words, a law is something that happens over and over. For instance, when we speak of “the law of gravity,” we mean that there is a force that always causes an object to fall to the ground when it is released. No matter where you go, this happens; so we call it “the law of gravity.”

We have within us a sin principle which is always trying to pull us down into sin. This is why the Bible calls it “the law of sin.” Can we overcome the law of sin by our own efforts? No, we cannot. God must deliver us from sin’s power.

How Does God Deliver Us?

God delivers us by giving us Christ. His life overcomes the law of sin and death in us.

Let us think about the law of gravity again. We know that the law of gravity is always operating. It holds us fast to the ground. We cannot fly without some mechanical device.

But birds fly. Does this mean that the law of gravity does not operate on them? No, the law of gravity pulls them downward just as it does us. But birds have a kind of life that overcomes the law of gravity. The “law” of a bird’s life is to fly.

Now let us come back to our situation. We have “the law of sin in our members,” but we also have Christ living in us, and there is a “law” to His life. The law of Christ’s life is to overcome sin. His life always triumphs over sin. And His life in us overcomes the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:2 says, “The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” Before you were saved, you may have felt as though you had to sin. Sin was the law of your life. But, Christ has given you a new law to live by. This law is victory over temptation and sin.

If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Saviour, John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

The Bible also says in Romans 10:9 and 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved…. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and I want to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! I want to congratulate you on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Until next time, May the Lord Bless You!
