How to Overcome Temptation, Part 1 (Onward Christian Soldiers #124)

Onward Christian Soldiers

Our key Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 10:13: There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Our lesson today is titled “How to Overcome Temptation, Part 1”

In our last lesson series we learned of the mighty weapon of prayer which God has placed in our hands. Through prayer, the child of God can conquer all things. But there is one thing which hinders prayer. What is it? It is SIN.

When we are yielding to sin, God will not hear our prayers. Satan knows this, and this is one reason why he works so hard at tempting Christians to sin.

Every Christian must learn how to overcome temptation, because we will be tempted. But, by God’s grace, we can overcome temptation. In this lesson series we are going to learn how to do this. First, let us answer some questions about sin and temptation.

Can Satan make us sin? No, he cannot. Satan can tempt us to sin, but he cannot make us sin.

Is temptation sin? No, it is not. The Lord Jesus was tempted, and we know that He did not sin. The Bible says that He was “in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”

We need to be clear on this point—TEMPTATION IS NOT SIN. Satan likes to condemn Christians even when they have not sinned. He likes to make them feel guilty for having been tempted by some sin, but it is not a sin to be tempted.

When does sin come in? Sin comes in when we say “yes” to the temptation. We sin when we give in to temptation.

The Bible speaks of some sins which are outward sins, and it speaks of other sins which are inward sins. And both categories are just as wicked and deadly to our prayer lives and to our testimony for the Lord.

By outward sins, we mean such sins as lying, stealing, immorality, bad attitudes, a betrayer or a person who has a Judas spirit, cursing, drunkenness, murder. No Christian should be guilty of these sins.

By inward sins, which are just as wicked and evil as outward sins if not more so, we mean such sins as pride, jealousy, envy, selfishness, unforgiveness, hatred, or lust. These are the secret sins which the eye of man cannot see. But God sees them, and they are hateful in His sight. We must learn how to have victory over them.

Most Christians have a besetting sin. This is the sin that you are most tempted with. Satan knows your weakest point, and this is where he tempts you most. To have victory over this sin and the other sins in your life, you must learn how to overcome temptation.

To overcome temptation, you must do four things:

1. Count on your death with Christ.
2. Count on Christ’s life in you.
3. Arm yourself with the Word of God.
4. Make no provision for the flesh.

We will consider the first of these four things in our next lesson..

If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Saviour, John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

The Bible also says in Romans 10:9 and 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved…. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and I want to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! I want to congratulate you on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

Until next time, May the Lord Bless You!
