The Day Jesus Crossed the Line, Part 7 (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 40)

TEXT: John 4:28-34

28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.

32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.

33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?

34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

———-

Today, I am continuing the daily Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign sermon series, which is aimed at sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with unbelievers and reminding Christians, in this important election year, to keep the main thing the main thing — and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents and politicians but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey God’s Great Commission and who have refused to obey God’s repeated commands to “pray without ceasing” for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders. Yes, you should pray for the right candidate to win; yes, you should vote for the candidate that the Lord gives you peace about voting for. But, don’t get caught up in it like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord.

This campaign is inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says, “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” Acts 5:42 which says, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.” And 2 Timothy 2:4 which says, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”

This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of those saints who still loves to hear the “Old, old story of Jesus and His love” — As the hymn says, “For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.” This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and understand the Gospel and be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell. This is message number 40.

Ray Stedman said, “There is a deep satisfaction in obedience to what God wants that is just like eating food: it fills you up; you feel satisfied, ministered to, fed. Many have discovered that there is nothing like obeying God to give a deep sense of satisfaction to life.”

After the Samaritan woman accepted Jesus’ message and went back to tell the people in her town, Jesus addresses His disciples (who had arrived as Jesus was talking to the woman). They had come back from getting food, and say to Jesus, “Master, eat.” All the while, they are wondering about what has transpired between Jesus and the Samaritan woman.

Jesus says to them, “I have meat to eat that ye know not of.” This sets the disciples on a new round of wondering. “Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?” Jesus says to them, “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.”

What was God’s will for Jesus? God’s will for Jesus was for Him to come to earth, preach the Gospel, declare that the kingdom of God had come, and then die on the cross for the sins of the world and be raised from the dead. Specifically, at this junction, God’s will for Jesus was for Him to bring the message of salvation to the Samaritan people. Seeing that the Samaritan woman had received the message, Jesus had done the will and had ‘finished’ this particular task. Just as receiving salvation brought joy and delight to the Samaritan woman, sharing the message of salvation brought fulfillment to Jesus so much so that His physical needs — hunger and thirst — paled in the light of His mission to the Samaritan’s being fulfilled. Warren Wiersbe said, “The disciples were satisfied with bread, but He was satisfied with accomplishing the Father’s work.” Phillips Brooks said, “Seek your life’s nourishment in your life’s work.”

Again, Jesus’ words and actions emphasize that there is something more important in life than fulfilling the desires of our flesh. The life we are experiencing now will one day pass away. We will die, and all that will remain of us in this physical, temporal world is memories. Some of us will be blessed enough to leave behind works of art, writings, music, buildings, other tangible reminders of who we were and what we did while we were alive.

But death is only a transition to a deeper form of life — the life of the soul and spirit freed from the bonds of human flesh and blood. The truth is, we will have an eternal existence for the soul never dies. Since this is the case, shouldn’t we be engaged in work that has eternal significance?

Jesus’ mission had eternal significance. He was obedient to the Father for the benefit of untold generations who would inhabit the earth. He found such satisfaction in His mission that physical fulfillment was only a small matter. We can have that kind of satisfaction in life too — where we are concerned about more important things than what we eat or what we wear. But, if we are going to live that kind of life, we must do as Jesus did — we must be obedient to the Father.

And, the first thing God the Father wants us to do is to place our faith and trust in His Son Jesus Christ, just as the Samaritan woman did. First Timothy 2 says God “will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” You, like the Samaritan woman, have heard enough to be saved. Will you trust him as your saviour today?

If you want to get to know Jesus Christ as your Saviour today, you must first accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
