TEXT: Revelation 6:1-8

1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.

2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

3 And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.

4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.

6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

7 And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.

8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

The Future Wars of the Nations (Part 5) — the Aftermath of the War of the Antichrist

We have seen how that the Antichrist’s peaceful rise to power will be followed by a devastating war. Those who believed this evil world ruler’s promises of peace will be stunned to find that he is no better than any of the other evil dictators that the world has seen. Indeed, he is far worse. These people’s lives will be turned upside down by the warfare and bloodshed erupting around the globe. And that is what we will begin looking at today — the aftermath of the war of the antichrist.

The aftermath is described beginning with the third seal in verse 5: “And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.”

Those who were not directly affected by the global military conflict will be affected by what comes after it — the black horseman of famine. Many of us who have been through tough times know what it is like to not have enough money to buy food. But for those who live in the end times, the problem will be that there is not enough food to buy. The war of the antichrist will have disrupted trade routes and destroyed food stockpiles. The lack of basic food supplies will drive up the cost of what is available, and people will have to spend an exorbitant amount of money to take care of the basic needs of their families.

John says that a voice declares, “A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny.” Now, wheat and barley were staples in the then known world; everybody ate something made of wheat or barley nearly every day. W. Harold Mare says the “penny” spoken of here is the Greek “denarius” — “a Roman coin worth about a day’s wages for a common worker.” Thus, John is saying that in the end times, a person would have to give up one day’s wages in order to eat for that day. “This is a picture of real famine and hardship.”

The ominous words — “A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny” — do not come from an angel or from one of the four beasts. We are not told who utters these words; John just says it is “a voice.” But I can imagine the newscasters of the Tribulation period using such terms to describe how the famine is impacting the world economy. “A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny.” I can imagine economists and financiers expressing dismay over the tragic turn their fortunes have taken. “A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny.” I can imagine mothers and fathers at grocery stores around the world lamenting the fact that they will have to spend more money than ever just to provide enough food for one day.

But this voice has more to say; it adds to its decree, “and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.” Oil and wine are more valuable products than wheat and barley. Because they will cost far more than regular food, it is likely that most people will not even attempt to buy them, and thus the store of these expensive foods will not be greatly impacted by the famine, and those who are extremely wealthy will still be able to buy them. W.A. Elwell said, “The rider is told not to damage the oil and wine, which could mean they were so valuable that they should be treated with special care, thus indicating a very severe famine; or it could mean that only the grain crops were affected by the famine (the oil and wine were untouched) which would indicate a relatively limited judgment. In the Old Testament, the olive, the grape, and the grain were the great blessings of God, providing the staples of life.” Dr. Tim Lahaye in his Study Bible says about these two verses, “The third seal introduces a world-wide famine when a quart of wheat is sold for the equivalent of a full day’s work. The food of the rich, however, the ‘oil and the wine,’ will not be hurt, showing the continued injustice of man to his fellow.”

God not only allows peace and safety to be taken from the earth during this time, but the livelihoods of many millions will be disrupted. But as we will see further in the Word of God, more warfare and its consequences are in store for earth.

If you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to share with you how you can trust Him for salvation so that you can be ready for His return.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
