The Future Wars of the Nations (Part 3) — the War Commenced by the Antichrist

TEXT: Revelation 6:1-8

1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.

2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

3 And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.

4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.

6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

7 And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.

8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

The Future Wars of the Nations (Part 3) — the War Commenced by the Antichrist

The second major war of the end times is a war waged by the antichrist himself. We have already looked at the first war — the Great Gog-Magog war in which a Russian-Arab alliance is miraculously defeated in their attempt to destroy and take over Israel. It is possible that this war will serve as a catalyst for some of the events described in the first four seals which we read about in Revelation 6.

Regarding this passage of Scripture, Dr. Ed Hindson states: “The first four seals involve four riders and four horses. Following the typical pattern of the Revelation, they give us an overview of events to come. The details follow in the trumpet judgments. The order of events is always the big picture first, then the snapshots. The panorama always precedes the individual landscapes of prophetic detail in the Apocalypse… The first four seals form a unity (four horsemen). Galloping across the earth, the four horsemen appear suddenly on the horizon. Metzger observes, ‘Notice how brief and concise this account is. Each of the four scenes is like a cameo, very small and compact. None of the four horsemen says a single word. Each rides forth in silence.’… These judgments are providential in character but are executed by human agencies. The picture in this chapter assures us that God is in control of the future. No judgment shall fall nor disaster occur without His divine permission. The massive catastrophes yet to come are part of the fulfillment of the divine will.”

Although God is in control, it is through His permissive will that the events spoken of in this chapter are carried out. Verse 1 reads, “I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals…” It is the slain and resurrected Lamb of God, Jesus Christ himself, who opens the seals that commences this sequence of events. He alone is able and worthy to open the seal that reveals the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

The arrival of the first horseman is described as such: “One of the four beasts said, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.” John, our tour guide through the end times, is invited to “come and see” what God is about to do. He simply reports what he sees and hears. Some scholars have noted that in some ancient Greek manuscripts of the New Testament, the command is not “Come and see”, but simply “Come”, and it is addressed not to John, as he is already caught up in the heavenly vision, but to the horsemen themselves. God himself calls these horsemen out onto the world stage for them to act out their part in the great drama of the end times.

Whether the command to “Come” is addressed to John or to the horsemen, the first rider gallops forth on a white horse. He has a bow. A crown is given to him. And his mission is to conquer.

Down through the years, many people have identified this rider as Jesus Christ. After all, he is on a white horse, he is a reigning king, and he is a conqueror. But a careful comparison of Christ as described in Revelation 19 will show that this rider is most likely not our Lord. John Walvoord states, “The chronology [which identifies this rider with Christ, is wrong, as Christ returns to the earth as a conqueror not at the beginning of the Tribulation but at the end of the Tribulation. Also the riders on the other horses obviously relate to destruction and judgment which precede the second coming of Christ by some period of time.”

So, who is the white horse rider of the last days? This rider is the antichrist who ascends to global power. The white horse upon which he rides signifies his victory over other powers that will exist in that day. Roman emperors always rode white horses when they returned victoriously from battle. We do not know how the antichrist will gain authority over the world, but we know that he will. World leaders, either willingly or through some deception on the part of the antichrist, will hand over control of the world. The text says that he is “given” a crown. Control of the world is handed to him on a platter.

We also notice that this rider carries a bow. Of course, a bow is a weapon, but it is only half a weapon. A bow is powerful, but it is mostly useless without an arrow. Scholars have taken this to indicate that the antichrist will not gain power by war and bloodshed. However, he will be able to project a certain charismatic power and authority over others. He’ll be fiercely diplomatic and persuasive. He may control some by threatening them, but might not follow through with those threats. He will win the world over with words and ideas. He will, as one president said, “carry a big stick,” but he won’t have to use it for some time.

This arrow-less bowman rides forth “conquering and to conquer.” He has one goal — world domination. He will promise peace, security, and prosperity — all things that people yearn for now and will yearn for in the future. Just as Eve believed Satan, the world will believe the words of the antichrist. They will buy into his new world system not knowing that they are quite literally playing into the devil’s hand. But, as we saw at the beginning of the passage, the Lamb of God is still in control as the first seal is broken and the world begins to suffer God’s wrath during the Tribulation.

If you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to share with you how you can trust Him for salvation so that you can be ready for His return.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door.” Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.
