The Coming Antichrist World System (Part 3)

TEXT: Revelation 17:12-18

12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.

13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.

14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

The Coming Antichrist World System (Part 3)

So far, we have looked at the rise of the Babylonian religious system that will come to power in the end times. This antichrist world religion will even have power and influence over the political/military rule of the antichrist. Today, we are going to begin looking at the fall of this antichrist system. As Dr. Tim Lahaye and Dr. Ed Hindson remind us, “Despite what some may think, it is no small matter that the harlot occupies two long chapters toward the end of Revelation. ‘The picture of the woman as utterly evil signifies spiritual adultery, portraying those who outwardly and religiously seem to be joined to the true God, but who are untrue to this relationship.'”

Our text for today begins by telling us about the “ten kings” who have not received their kingdom yet. Thus, they are future rulers. Henry Alford said, “They are ten kingdoms which shall arise out of the fourth great kingdom there: ten European powers, which in the last time, in concert with and subjugation to the antichristian power, shall make war against Christ. In the precise number and form here indicated, they have not yet arisen… What changes in Europe may bring them into the required tale and form, it is not for us to say.” Many believe the forerunner of these ten nations — a revived form of the Roman Empire — is today’s European Union. It is interesting to note that the European Union began when six nations gathered in Rome to sign a treaty which formed the European Economic Community. That treaty is called the Treaty of Rome.

However these ten nations come into being, they will all give their allegiance to the great whore — the worldwide antichrist religion that will spread across the globe in the end times. This is signified by the ten horns of the beast being ridden by the whore. Just as the significant modern political organization known as the European Union has strong ties to Rome, a significant modern religious organization also has strong ties to Rome. In fact, they call themselves the Roman Catholic Church and they claim global authority; the word “catholic” means universal. Dr. LaHaye and Dr. Hindson state that, if what many prophecy scholars believe about the Catholic Church is true, “it is the Roman Church that would team up with the beast to control the nations. The leaders of that religious system would even control the beast for a time.”

However, on the way to worldwide peace and harmony (as the great whore will lead everyone to believe), a strange thing happens. The ten horns — the kings and their nations — will turn against the great whore. The Bible says, “the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.” We are also told that God ‘puts it into their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast.’

Eventually, the great whore and her worldwide antichrist religion will be judged and destroyed. Now, this serves two purposes. First, during the end times, the antichrist will not tolerate the worship of anyone but himself. He will use the whore’s religious system to consolidate the diverse people of the world into one religious body. Then, he will turn on the whore, discard her, and demand that he alone be worshiped as God. The ten nations will agree to this, pledge their sole allegiance to the antichrist, and help to destroy the whore. For a time, it will seem as though Satan has gotten what he has always wanted — to be god.

God’s purposes will also be fulfilled by the fall of Babylon. Down through history, God has often used one wicked group of people to judge another wicked group of people. For example, He used heathen nations to judge Israel when it turned apostate. He will do it again in the end times. Why is the Babylonian whore judged so harshly? Perhaps it is because, even more than atheism or agnosticism, God hates a religious system that claims to be worshiping Him, but is actually being guided and directed by Satan. Our text tells us that the destruction of Babylon will be the fulfillment of His will.

This chapter closes with a reminder that “the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.” John would have most likely identified that city with Rome — as it was the capital of the only world empire during that time. Christians in John’s day were tempted to subscribe to Rome’s pagan ways: the worship of idols, the worship of the caesars, the denial of Christ as God. Some struggled with placing their confidence in the earthly city rather than the heavenly city.

Christians today face the same struggles. Will we allow ourselves to be subject to the prevailing, antichrist winds of the cities of this world? Not just of Rome or Babylon, but of Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC, London, Jakarta, or Paris? We must remember that the world system is opposed to God’s system and that we ought not to be trying to make homes for ourselves down here. We have a greater city, the New Jerusalem, ‘whose builder and maker is God’ preserved in Heaven for us. Like the future Babylon, the cities of this world will perish, but our “inheritance” — our great city — will never fade away.

If you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to share with you how you can trust Him for salvation so that you can be ready for His return.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
